Central Michigan Dominates Buffalo in MAC Women’s Basketball

BUFFALO, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Central Michigan Chippewas delivered a dominant wire-to-wire performance on Wednesday afternoon, overwhelming the Buffalo Bulls 90-59 in a Mid-American Conference women’s basketball game at Alumni Arena.

From the opening tip, Central Michigan established a commanding presence, racing out to a 24-10 lead after the first quarter and extending it to a 51-29 advantage by halftime. The Chippewas’ offensive efficiency and relentless rebounding created a deficit the Bulls could never meaningfully challenge.

The most pivotal stretch of the game came early in the first quarter, immediately setting the tone for the evening. After Buffalo’s Aniya Rowe scored the game’s first three points, Central Michigan responded with a devastating 16-0 run over the next three and a half minutes. The surge was fueled by aggressive defense and transition offense, featuring layups from Taylor Anderson and Madi Morson, a three-pointer from Lilah Turnbull, and capped by a jumper from Ayanna-Sarai Darrington. That explosive sequence gave the Chippewas a 16-3 lead, effectively deciding the contest before many in the crowd of 5,778 had settled into their seats.

Central Michigan’s control was comprehensive. They shot 45.2% from the field compared to Buffalo’s 37.7%, and were particularly effective from beyond the arc, hitting 9 of 19 three-point attempts. The Bulls managed only 4 of 21 from deep. The rebounding disparity was staggering, with Central Michigan holding a 52-31 overall edge and a dominant 18-5 advantage on the offensive glass, leading to 18 second-chance points.

Anderson, a 5-foot-10 guard from South Lyon, Michigan, was the engine for the Chippewas, posting a near triple-double with 9 points, a game-high 17 rebounds, 5 assists and a block in 30 minutes. Her work on the boards was instrumental in Central Michigan’s 84-79 possession advantage and their 106.6 offensive rating.

She was joined in double figures by four teammates. Morson, a guard from Canton, Michigan, led all scorers with 23 points. Jayda Mosley added 17 points, all in the second half, including five three-pointers. Darrington contributed 13 points and 5 rebounds, while Turnbull chipped in 10 points and 6 assists.

Buffalo, which fell to 2-20 overall, was led by Rowe’s 25 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Diann Jackson scored 13 points and Janyah Bohanon added 11, but the Bulls committed 18 turnovers and generated only 6 assists as a team, struggling against Central Michigan’s active defense.

The Chippewas, who entered the game with a 69.5% win probability according to Interstat’s ELO system, improved to 14-7 overall and have now won three of their last four conference games. The victory was a bounce-back performance after a home loss to Ball State on Jan. 28.

Central Michigan next hosts Marshall on Saturday. Buffalo, mired in a five-game losing streak, travels to face Bowling Green on Feb. 10.
