Preview: UNC Asheville at Charleston Southern Women’s Basketball

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (Interstat) — Two Big South Conference teams seeking momentum will meet Wednesday when the Charleston Southern Buccaneers host the UNC Asheville Bulldogs at CSU Field House.

The matchup features teams with nearly identical records. UNC Asheville enters at 8-14 overall, while Charleston Southern is 7-15. The Buccaneers won the first meeting this season, 72-66, in Asheville on Jan. 14.

The Bulldogs are looking to snap a two-game skid, most recently a narrow 54-52 home loss to Gardner-Webb on Jan. 30. They will lean on forward Nia Green, who has been a consistent force. In the loss to Gardner-Webb, Green posted a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, adding four assists and three blocks. In the Jan. 14 loss to Charleston Southern, she scored 16 points with five assists.

Charleston Southern arrives with confidence after an 85-62 road victory at South Carolina Upstate on Jan. 30. Guard Tyonna Bailey led that charge with 28 points. She also scored 20 points in the Buccaneers’ win over UNC Asheville earlier this season, highlighting her role as a key scorer in the series.

Beyond the star players, the game could hinge on supporting performances. For Asheville, Kristen McMillan (11 points, 6 rebounds vs. Gardner-Webb) provides interior help. Charleston Southern’s Caelan Ellis (21 points vs. Upstate) and Asha Sra (12 points, 8 assists) offer additional scoring and playmaking.

Both teams have struggled for consistency in conference play, making this a pivotal game for positioning ahead of the Big South tournament. UNC Asheville aims to avenge its earlier loss and improve its road record, while Charleston Southern looks to protect its home floor and build on its most recent offensive outburst.

Tip-off is set for Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2026, in North Charleston.
