High Point at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. (Interstat) — The surging High Point Panthers, boasting one of the nation’s top records, visit the Winthrop Eagles in a Big South Conference women’s basketball rematch Wednesday night at Winthrop Coliseum.

High Point (20-2, 9-0 Big South) enters on a nine-game winning streak and sits atop the conference standings. The Panthers, who defeated Winthrop 74-60 at home on Jan. 21, are coming off a dominant 70-41 victory over Presbyterian on Sunday. Chana Paxixe, a key player for the Panthers, contributed 9 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists in that win. Over her last seven games, Paxixe has averaged 7.1 points in 19 minutes per contest.

Winthrop (11-12, 4-5) looks to halt a two-game skid and improve its position in the league. The Eagles fell 61-57 at Radford on Saturday despite a strong performance from Madison Ruff, who scored 19 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Ruff has been a consistent scorer for Winthrop, averaging 12.1 points over her last seven games, including 11 points in the earlier loss to High Point.

The Panthers have been formidable on both ends of the court during their streak, winning by an average margin of 24.2 points in conference play. Beyond Paxixe, High Point has received balanced contributions, with Anna Hager (14 points) and Macy Spencer (18 points) leading the way against Presbyterian.

Winthrop, which has lost four of its last six, will rely on Ruff and Tocarra Johnson, who had 7 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks against Radford, to challenge the conference leaders. The Eagles are 6-4 at home this season.

Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST. Following this game, High Point visits Radford on Saturday, while Winthrop travels to Gardner-Webb.
