Utah Valley Edges Tarleton State in Tight WAC Contest
VINEYARD, Utah (Interstat) — In a game defined by relentless defensive pressure and a cascade of turnovers, the Utah Valley Wolverines edged the Tarleton State Texans 70-67 in a Western Athletic Conference women’s basketball thriller Thursday night at the UCCU Center.
The contest, a stark reversal from Utah Valley’s 74-49 victory over the Texans just 28 days prior, was decided in the final chaotic seconds. With the Wolverines clinging to a 69-67 lead, Tarleton State’s Gia Adams missed a potential game-tying three-pointer with five seconds remaining. Utah Valley’s Kaylee Headrick secured the defensive rebound, was fouled, and made one of two free throws to extend the lead to three.
Tarleton State had one final chance, inbounding with 4.8 seconds left. Adams drove the length of the court but her contested layup missed, and Mar’Cyah Willis’s desperation follow at the buzzer was off the mark, sealing the victory for the home team before an announced crowd of 679.
The most pivotal stretch of the game came not in the final seconds, but in the third quarter. Leading 38-35, Utah Valley unleashed a decisive 14-2 run over a five-minute span, fueled almost entirely by Tarleton State’s offensive miscues. The Wolverines converted five Texans turnovers into 10 points during the surge. Cambree Blackham ignited the run with a three-pointer, Amanda Barcello added another, and Kylee Mabry capped it with a driving layup and a three-pointer on consecutive possessions, pushing Utah Valley’s lead to 52-37 with 1:22 left in the period.
Tarleton State, which committed 22 turnovers leading to 30 Utah Valley points, clawed back in the fourth. A 12-2 Texans run, keyed by Adams and Willis, cut the deficit to 63-61 with 2:25 to play. The teams traded scores until, tied at 67, Headrick was fouled on a drive and made two free throws with 33 seconds left to give Utah Valley the lead for good at 69-67, setting up the frantic finish.
Adams, a 5-foot-6 guard from Houston, was brilliant in defeat for Tarleton State, scoring a game-high 25 points to go with four assists in 36 minutes. Willis, from Waco, Texas, added 14 points. Their backcourt efforts nearly overcame a night where the Texans managed only seven assists against those 22 turnovers.
Utah Valley’s victory was a product of defensive harassment, recording 18 steals and forcing the Texans into an offensive rating of just 84.8 points per 100 possessions. Barcello, a 5-11 guard from Chandler, Arizona, led the Wolverines with 17 points. Mabry, from Kaysville, Utah, contributed 12 points, while Headrick of Bluffdale, Utah, added 13 points and Blackham chipped in nine points and five assists.
The Wolverines also dominated points off turnovers, holding a 30-12 advantage, which proved to be the decisive statistical margin in a game where both teams shot nearly identically from the field. Utah Valley finished 22 of 55, while Tarleton State was 23 of 60.
Tarleton State’s interior presence was anchored by 6-foot-6 freshman Elodie Lutbert of Sainte-Luce, Martinique, who scored nine points, grabbed seven rebounds and blocked four shots. Utah Valley’s Halle Nelson, a 6-1 forward from American Fork, Utah, provided critical all-around play with seven points, three assists, two blocks and a game-high five steals.
With the win, Utah Valley evened its season record at 9-10 overall and in WAC play. Tarleton State fell to 10-9 overall and 5-5 in the conference. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Stephenville, Texas, on Thursday, Feb. 26.
The game was a tale of two halves for the Texans, who led 38-33 at halftime after shooting 50% from the field in the second quarter. However, Utah Valley’s defensive adjustments after the break sparked the game-changing run, holding Tarleton State to 13 points in the third quarter and ultimately securing a narrow regular-season split between the teams.
