Incarnate Word at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (Interstat) — The Incarnate Word Cardinals will look to complete a regular-season sweep when they visit the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders in a Southland Conference women’s basketball game Thursday night at American Bank Center.

The Cardinals (10-8, 7-2 Southland) enter on a four-game winning streak, which includes a 90-73 victory over these same Islanders just five days ago on Jan. 24. Incarnate Word has found its form in conference play, winning seven of its last nine.

Meanwhile, the Islanders (3-15, 2-7) are struggling, having lost five of their last six games. Their lone win in that stretch was a 68-65 home victory over Southeastern Louisiana on Jan. 17.

A key matchup will feature two of the conference’s top performers from the first meeting. Incarnate Word guard Madison Cockrell is averaging 16.4 points per game in Southland play and torched the Islanders for 21 points and five assists in the recent win. For Corpus Christi, forward Torie Sevier answered with 20 points and three rebounds in that contest, showcasing her ability to score inside.

The Cardinals’ success has been built on efficient offense, scoring 70 or more points in six of their seven conference wins. Cockrell’s backcourt play, supported by Madison Williams and Jorja Elliott, who combined for 23 points in the last matchup, provides a consistent threat.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will need a stronger defensive effort after allowing 90 points in San Antonio. The Islanders have been held under 65 points in eight of their nine conference games. Generating offense beyond Sevier and Marissa Shelton, who had 14 points and five assists last week, will be critical for the home team.

The Islanders will aim to leverage home court advantage to split the season series and disrupt the Cardinals’ momentum in the conference standings.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST Thursday.
