Texas-Rio Grande Valley at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (Interstat) — The Texas-Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros look to complete a regular-season sweep of rival Texas A&M-Corpus Christi when the Southland Conference foes meet Thursday night at the American Bank Center.
The Vaqueros (9-9, 4-1 Southland) won the first matchup 58-47 on Jan. 3 in Edinburg, powered by 21 points, nine rebounds and five assists from standout guard Jalayah Ingram. UTRGV has won four of its last five, with the lone loss a 70-54 setback to McNeese State on Saturday.
Ingram has been instrumental, averaging 19.8 points over her last five games played. She logged a 29-point performance in a win at Texas A&M-Commerce on Jan. 10.
The Islanders (3-13, 1-4) snapped a four-game skid with a 68-65 home victory over Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday. Freshman forward K’Nari Holliday led the way with 16 points and four blocks, showcasing the potential of a young roster. Holliday’s production has been inconsistent, but her defensive presence offers a spark.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, which has lost 10 of its last 12, will need a stronger offensive showing after shooting just 28.8% from the field in the first meeting. Containing Ingram will be a primary focus.
Despite the disparity in records, the Coastal Bend rivalry often produces tightly contested games. The Islanders will aim to defend their home court and gain momentum, while the Vaqueros seek to solidify their position in the conference standings.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST.
