Quinnipiac Tops Mount Saint Mary’s in Defensive Struggle

HAMDEN, Conn. (Interstat) — The Quinnipiac Bobcats used a dominant second quarter to seize control and never looked back, defeating the Mount Saint Mary’s Mountaineers 56-43 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Thursday night at TD Bank Sports Center.

In a rematch of a game played just two weeks prior, a 70-44 Quinnipiac victory, the Bobcats again proved too much for the Mountaineers, using defensive pressure and a balanced offensive attack to improve to 15-4 overall. Mount Saint Mary’s fell to 9-10.

The game’s decisive stretch came in the second period. After a tightly contested first quarter that ended with Quinnipiac holding a slim 11-10 lead, the Bobcats opened the second frame on a 13-2 run. The surge was fueled by defensive stops and efficient transition play. Ella Ryan of Brentwood, Tennessee, hit a three-pointer off an assist from Ella O’Donnell, and Jackie Grisdale followed with a driving layup, also assisted by O’Donnell. Sydney Ryan of Brentwood, Tennessee, then converted a layup off a feed from Anna Foley, forcing a Mountaineers timeout with Quinnipiac leading 24-12.

Mount Saint Mary’s, which shot poorly from the field throughout the night, struggled to generate consistent offense against Quinnipiac’s active defense. The Mountaineers managed only nine points in the second quarter on 3-of-13 shooting and committed five turnovers. Quinnipiac, by contrast, scored 17 points in the period, taking a 28-21 lead into halftime.

The Bobcats extended their lead in the third quarter, opening with a 6-2 spurt to push the advantage to double digits, where it remained for the duration. A key sequence saw Paige Girardi of Warwick, New York, connect on a jumper and then a layup, the latter assisted by O’Donnell, to give Quinnipiac a 35-24 lead midway through the quarter.

Mount Saint Mary’s center Berlynn Carlson of Beaverton, Oregon, tried to keep her team within reach, scoring 10 of her team-high 15 points in the second half. Her layup with 35 seconds left in the third cut the deficit to 44-33, but Quinnipiac answered immediately. Sydney Ryan hit a jumper and, after a Mountaineers turnover, Ella Ryan finished a fast-break layup, both assists coming from Girardi, to restore a 13-point Bobcat lead heading to the fourth.

Quinnipiac put the game away early in the final period. A layup by Ella Ryan and a driving score from O’Donnell of Sligo, Ireland, were part of a quick 6-0 run that gave the Bobcats their largest lead at 50-34 with 6:15 to play. The Mountaineers could get no closer than 11 points the rest of the way.

Grisdale led all Quinnipiac scorers with 14 points, adding two assists in 37 minutes. Sydney Ryan matched her with 15 points. Girardi orchestrated the offense with a game-high five assists to go with seven points. O’Donnell contributed six points, four rebounds and four assists in just 17 minutes.

For Mount Saint Mary’s, Carlson’s 15-point effort came with five defensive rebounds. Giana Hoddinott of Littlestown, Pennsylvania, added six points. The Mountaineers were hampered by 18 turnovers, which Quinnipiac converted into 19 points.

The Bobcats held a significant advantage in bench scoring, 23-8, and outscored the Mountaineers 32-18 in the paint. An announced crowd of 394 watched as Quinnipiac maintained its position near the top of the MAAC standings.

Quinnipiac will look to continue its momentum on the road Saturday at Manhattan. Mount Saint Mary’s returns home to host Merrimack on Saturday.
