Texas-Arlington at Tarleton State

STEPHENVILLE, Texas (Interstat) — A key Western Athletic Conference rematch awaits Wednesday when the Tarleton State Texans host the Texas-Arlington Mavericks in women’s basketball at Wisdom Gym.

The Texans (9-8) look to complete a regular-season sweep after defeating the Mavericks 66-57 on Dec. 29 in Stephenville. Tarleton State has won two straight, including a 64-60 victory over Utah Tech last Saturday. Texas-Arlington (8-10) enters with momentum from a two-game winning streak, most recently a 59-47 defensive win over Utah Valley.

A focal point will be the backcourt matchup between Tarleton State’s Jakoriah Long and UTA’s Kira Reynolds. Long, who scored 13 points in the first meeting, is averaging 14.2 points over her last five games. She led the Texans with 17 points in Saturday’s win.

Reynolds, however, presents a multifaceted challenge. The guard is coming off a 16-point, four-block performance against Utah Valley and scored 21 points in a narrow loss to Abilene Christian on Jan. 10. In the December loss to Tarleton State, she was held to eight points but contributed four blocks.

Both teams have shown recent improvement after slow starts to WAC play. The Mavericks’ current streak followed a four-game skid, while the Texans have rebounded from a three-game losing streak with consecutive home wins.

Defense could dictate the tempo. UTA has held its last two opponents under 60 points. Tarleton State’s win earlier this season was anchored by holding the Mavericks to 32.8% shooting from the field.

The game is part of a tight conference race where every result carries weight for seeding in the upcoming WAC tournament. For Texas-Arlington, it’s a chance for redemption on the same floor. For Tarleton State, it’s an opportunity to solidify its standing above .500 and build a three-game win streak.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST Wednesday.
