Saint Peter’s Upsets Iona in Metro Atlantic Women’s Basketball

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a dominant opening statement and a resilient closing act, the Saint Peter’s women’s basketball team secured a hard-fought 63-57 victory over Iona in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference matchup Monday afternoon at the Hynes Center.

The visiting Peacocks, entering the contest with a 3-14 record, stunned the Gaels and the crowd of 579 by erupting for an 18-2 run to start the game. Saint Peter’s connected on four first-quarter three-pointers, two from Nikola Zdenkova and one each from Reilly Sunday and Layla Laws, to build a commanding 18-10 lead after one period. Iona, which fell to 11-7, struggled to find any offensive rhythm against an active Saint Peter’s defense early, committing five turnovers and shooting just 4 of 15 from the field in the opening frame.

The Gaels responded in the second quarter, outscoring Saint Peter’s 19-8 behind the relentless play of Isabellah Middleton. The junior guard from Leesburg, Virginia, scored 11 of her game-high 26 points in the period, helping Iona claw back to take a brief 29-26 lead into halftime. The Peacocks’ offense stalled, managing only three field goals in the quarter as Iona’s defensive pressure generated eight steals before the break.

The pivotal shift came in the third quarter. After Iona extended its lead to five points, Saint Peter’s rediscovered its offensive balance and defensive intensity. A critical sequence saw the Peacocks capitalize on an Iona turnover, leading to a Nikola Zdenkova jumper. Moments later, a block by Eszter Turi ignited a fast break that ended with a Louella Allana three-pointer, swinging momentum back to the visitors. Saint Peter’s outscored Iona 20-13 in the quarter, with freshman post player Carys Roy of Cowbridge, Germany, providing a crucial interior presence. Roy scored eight of her team-high 16 points in the period, including a key hook shot and two free throws, as the Peacocks reclaimed a 46-42 lead heading to the fourth.

The final period was a tense, back-and-forth affair. Iona’s Zoey Ward, who posted a formidable double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds, converted a pair of free throws to tie the game at 48 with 6:42 remaining. Saint Peter’s answered immediately with a Reilly Sunday pull-up jumper and a Carys Roy layup off a deft pass from Layla Laws to go ahead 52-48, a lead they would not relinquish.

Iona had opportunities down the stretch, but critical mistakes and staunch Saint Peter’s defense sealed the outcome. With the Peacocks leading 54-52 and under a minute to play, Iona committed a turnover and was forced to foul. Saint Peter’s, which shot an efficient 15 of 18 from the free throw line for the game, clinched the win at the stripe. Louella Allana, the steady point guard from Laval, Canada, calmly sank two free throws with seven seconds left for the final margin.

Statistically, the game was a contrast in styles. Saint Peter’s won with precision, shooting 43.5% from the field and a blistering 50% from three-point range. Iona, despite winning the rebounding battle 41-32 and forcing 18 turnovers, was undone by poor shooting, making just 34.5% of its field goals and 5 of 19 from beyond the arc. The Peacocks’ ability to protect the ball improved dramatically in the second half, committing only seven turnovers after the break.

Reilly Sunday added 14 points and four assists for Saint Peter’s, while Allana filled the stat sheet with seven points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals. For Iona, Middleton’s 26-point effort was complemented by Ward’s double-double, but the rest of the Gaels combined for just 18 points on 6-of-26 shooting.

The victory marks a significant conference road win for a Saint Peter’s team that had lost five straight and was projected by advanced metrics to have less than a 20% chance of winning. Iona, which had won three of its last four, will look to regroup quickly in MAAC play.

Saint Peter’s next hosts Merrimack on Thursday. Iona travels to face Rider on the same night.
