Miami (Ohio) Pulls Away From Eastern Michigan in Mid-American Conference Matchup

OXFORD, Ohio (Interstat) — The Miami (Ohio) Redhawks used a disruptive defensive effort and a balanced scoring attack to pull away from the Eastern Michigan Eagles for a 69-55 victory in a Mid-American Conference women’s basketball game Wednesday night at Millett Hall.

The Redhawks, improving to 13-4 overall, capitalized on a staggering 22 Eastern Michigan turnovers, converting them into 23 points. That margin proved decisive in a game where the Eagles (7-8) struggled to find any sustained offensive rhythm, posting an offensive rating of just 77.7 on 71 possessions.

Miami set the tone early, forcing five Eastern Michigan turnovers in the first five minutes to build a lead it would never relinquish. The Redhawks led 19-16 after a back-and-forth first quarter and extended the advantage to 35-31 by halftime, weathering a pair of first-half three-pointers from Eastern Michigan’s Ainhoa Cea.

The third quarter was where Miami created separation. Leading 45-39 with just over six minutes left in the period, the Redhawks clamped down defensively, holding Eastern Michigan without a field goal for nearly four minutes. During that stretch, Miami embarked on an 8-0 run, fueled by layups from Ilse de Vries and Amber Tretter and capped by a Tamar Singer assist to Tretter for another layup, pushing the lead to 53-39.

Eastern Michigan’s Sisi Eleko stopped the bleeding with a jump shot, but the damage was done. The Eagles, who shot just 41.2% from the floor for the game, could not mount a serious challenge in the fourth quarter, as Miami’s lead never dipped below 10 points.

The most important part of the game was Miami’s relentless defensive pressure, particularly in the third quarter, which transformed a close contest into a comfortable victory. The Redhawks’ nine steals and the Eagles’ 22 giveaways were the central narrative, with Miami consistently turning Eastern Michigan’s mistakes into easy transition opportunities and critical scoring runs that broke the game open.

Amber Scalia led Miami with 15 points and six assists, orchestrating the offense while also contributing a steal. The Redhawks showcased their depth with four players scoring in double figures. Nuria Jurjo added 16 points, Amber Tretter scored 16, and Clara Gonzalez Planella came off the bench to chip in nine critical points, including a key three-pointer in the first quarter.

For Eastern Michigan, Sisi Eleko shouldered the offensive load with a game-high 19 points. Peyton Hill added 13 points, and Ainhoa Cea finished with 10 points and five assists. However, the Eagles’ ball-handling woes were pervasive, with Cea and starting guard Fernanda Ovalle combining for 11 of the team’s turnovers.

Miami shot 48.3% from the field and outscored Eastern Michigan 36-26 in the paint, demonstrating more efficient offense to complement its defensive prowess. The Redhawks also won the battle on the glass, securing key offensive rebounds that led to 11 second-chance points.

The victory keeps Miami near the top of the MAC standings as it heads into a road game at Bowling Green on Saturday. Eastern Michigan, which has now lost three of its last four games, looks to rebound on the road at Central Michigan, also on Saturday. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Ypsilanti on Feb. 25.
