Iona Rallies Past Merrimack in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Clash

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (Interstat) — In a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women’s basketball game defined by defensive pressure and critical late-game execution, the Iona Gaels held off a persistent Merrimack Warriors squad for a 58-51 victory on Wednesday afternoon at the Hynes Center.

A crowd of 1,525 saw the Gaels improve to 11-6 overall, while Merrimack evened its record at 8-8.

The most important part of the game unfolded in the final three minutes, as Iona leveraged its defense and composure at the free-throw line to seal the win after Merrimack had closed to within a single possession. Leading 50-48 with just over three minutes to play, Iona’s Ale Civera sank a crucial three-pointer off an assist from Isabellah Middleton to extend the lead to five. After a Merrimack turnover, Mya Zaccagnini converted a driving layup to push the Gael advantage to seven.

Merrimack, which had fought back from a slow start, refused to fold. Paloma Garcia answered with a layup to make it 53-50 with 1:26 remaining. Following another defensive stop, Garcia struck again with a driving layup, cutting Iona’s lead to 53-52 with just 50 seconds on the clock, setting up a tense finish.

On the ensuing possession, Iona’s Middleton was fouled and calmly sank both free throws with 32 seconds left for a 55-52 edge. After a blocked three-point attempt by Merrimack, Iona secured the defensive rebound. The Gaels then forced a Merrimack turnover and, following a timeout, put the game away at the line. Mya Zaccagnini and Ella Fajardo each hit a pair of free throws in the final 12 seconds to provide the final margin, as Merrimack’s last-gasp three-point attempt missed.

The game’s decisive stretch was a culmination of a theme that persisted throughout the night: Iona’s ability to capitalize on Merrimack mistakes. The Gaels scored 24 points off Warriors turnovers, a stark contrast to Merrimack’s 5 points off Iona miscues. This disparity proved pivotal in a low-scoring, grinding contest.

Iona established early control, closing the first quarter on a 13-2 run to lead 15-6. The Gaels maintained that cushion for most of the first half, but Merrimack closed the second quarter strong. The Warriors outscored Iona 14-9 in the period, fueled by eight points from Madison Roman, to trail just 24-20 at halftime.

The third quarter was a stalemate, with each team scoring 13 points, allowing Iona to carry a 37-33 lead into the final frame. The Warriors’ offense, which had struggled from the perimeter all afternoon, found success inside, finishing with 32 points in the paint. A 9-2 run early in the fourth quarter, capped by a Molly Manion three-pointer, brought Merrimack to within 45-44 and set the stage for the dramatic finish.

Isabellah Middleton led all scorers for Iona with 15 points, adding three assists. Zoey Ward contributed 13 points, while Ella Fajardo added 10. The Gaels shot effectively from the free-throw line down the stretch to secure the win.

For Merrimack, Paloma Garcia and Madison Roman each scored 13 points. Garcia added three blocked shots. Oralye Kiefer finished with 10 points, four assists and two blocks, while Lydia Melashenko played all 40 minutes, directing the offense.

According to Interstat’s ELO system, Merrimack entered the game with a slight 51.6 percent probability to win. The Warriors’ recent form included a three-game winning streak within the MAAC, snapped by Wednesday’s result.

Iona next hosts Saint Peter’s on Monday. Merrimack returns home to face Quinnipiac, also on Monday. The two teams will meet again in North Andover, Massachusetts, on Jan. 29.
