Ohio Outlasts Eastern Michigan in High-Scoring MAC Women’s Basketball Affair

ATHENS, Ohio (Interstat) — In a high-octane Mid-American Conference clash defined by explosive runs and a relentless offensive display, the Ohio Bobcats weathered a furious start from Eastern Michigan and used a dominant middle stretch to secure a 96-87 victory in women’s basketball on Wednesday night at the Convocation Center.

The game’s pivotal shift came in the second and third quarters, where Ohio outscored Eastern Michigan 62-32, transforming a nine-point first-quarter deficit into a commanding 21-point lead. This surge ultimately proved insurmountable for the visiting Eagles despite a late rally.

Eastern Michigan, fueled by the hot hand of Fernanda Ovalle, raced to an early advantage. The junior guard from Santiago, Chile, scored 11 of her game-high 24 points in the opening period, propelling the Eagles to a 29-20 lead after one quarter. The Eagles’ offense flowed smoothly, with Spanish point guard Ainhoa Cea orchestrating and dishing out 12 assists.

Ohio’s response was swift and multifaceted. The Bobcats opened the second quarter on a 15-4 run to seize the lead, a margin they would not relinquish. The backcourt duo of Monica Williams and Bailey Tabeling ignited the comeback. Williams, a sophomore from Indianapolis, was a catalyst with 19 points and six assists, while Tabeling, from Seymour, Indiana, poured in a team-high 21 points, including three three-pointers during the decisive surge.

The Bobcats’ offensive engine roared in the third quarter, putting up 32 points to extend their lead to 82-61. Elli Garnett provided efficient interior scoring, adding 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field. The Bobcats’ ball movement and ability to capitalize on Eastern Michigan’s 18 turnovers were critical during this game-defining stretch.

Eastern Michigan refused to capitulate, mounting a valiant fourth-quarter charge. The Eagles unleashed a 20-6 run over a five-minute span, cutting the Ohio lead to 88-81 with just over three minutes remaining. Brooklyn Thrash, a Wayne, Ohio native, scored 10 of her 22 points in the final frame, and Ovalle continued her scoring barrage from beyond the arc.

However, Ohio stabilized in the closing minutes. Key free throws from Williams, Asiah Baxter, and Tabeling in the final minute stymied the comeback. A critical defensive stop, capped by a Gigi Bower blocked three-point attempt as time expired, sealed the win for the home team.

The most important part of the game was Ohio’s overwhelming 62-32 scoring advantage across the second and third quarters. This 30-point swing, fueled by transition offense, sharp three-point shooting, and forced turnovers, completely reversed the game’s momentum after Eastern Michigan’s strong start. While the Eagles’ late push made the score respectable, the Bobcats’ control during this extended middle period established the foundation for the victory.

With the win, Ohio improves to 9-4 overall and 2-0 in MAC play. Eastern Michigan falls to 7-6 and 1-1 in the conference. The Bobcats travel to face Buffalo on Saturday, while the Eagles host Kent State.
