High Point Dominates Presbyterian in Big South Women’s Basketball Matchup

CLINTON, S.C. (Interstat) — The High Point Panthers wasted no time asserting their dominance Wednesday night, racing to a 23-point first quarter and cruising to a 76-43 victory over the Presbyterian Blue Hose in a Big South Conference women’s basketball game at the Templeton Center.

The game was effectively decided in the opening period as High Point’s defensive pressure and offensive execution created an insurmountable gap. The Panthers, now 14-2 overall and 3-0 in the conference, held Presbyterian to just nine points in the second quarter, taking a 40-24 lead into halftime and never allowing the Blue Hose, who fell to 2-14 and 0-3, to mount any semblance of a comeback.

The most important part of the game was the opening ten minutes, where High Point established a commanding tone on both ends of the floor. The Panthers opened with a 7-0 run, fueled by an early and-one play from guard Macy Spencer. While Presbyterian’s Daniella Velez briefly interrupted the run with a three-pointer, High Point’s defense quickly stifled any rhythm. The Blue Hose committed five turnovers in the quarter and struggled to find clean looks against an active Panther defense that recorded multiple deflections and contested shots.

Offensively, High Point was efficient and balanced in the first. Spencer, the game’s leading scorer, was aggressive from the outset, attacking the basket and drawing fouls. Her backcourt mate, Aaliyah Collins, provided quick ball movement and penetration. The Panthers’ early success inside then opened opportunities on the perimeter and in transition, allowing them to build a 23-15 lead after one quarter. That early burst set the trajectory for the entire evening, as Presbyterian never cut the deficit to single digits again.

Spencer, a 5-foot-8 guard from Katy, Texas, finished with a game-high 21 points in 32 minutes, setting the offensive pace. Forward Anna Hager, a 6-foot sophomore from Norrbotten, Sweden, provided a formidable interior presence with 13 points and four blocked shots, altering countless other attempts by the Blue Hose. Chana Paxixe added 10 points for the Panthers.

Presbyterian was led by Ja’Cia Cunningham’s 13 points. Ore Ogunwolere added seven points, two assists, a block and three steals for the Blue Hose, but the team shot poorly from the field and was hampered by 22 turnovers, which High Point converted into 28 points.

The Panthers expanded their lead in the third quarter, holding Presbyterian to just 10 points while extending their advantage to 54-34. The fourth quarter saw more of the same, with High Point’s reserves maintaining the defensive intensity and extending the final margin.

The victory continued a strong start to conference play for High Point, which entered as a heavy favorite according to predictive metrics. The Panthers have now won five straight games since a non-conference loss to Davidson in mid-December. Presbyterian, meanwhile, continued to search for its first Big South win amidst a challenging season.

An announced crowd of 360 at the Templeton Center watched as High Point controlled every facet of the game, finishing with advantages in points off turnovers, second-chance points and bench production.

High Point next hosts Radford on Saturday, looking to maintain its share of the early conference lead. Presbyterian travels to face South Carolina Upstate next Wednesday.

The game unfolded as projected, with High Point’s superior depth, defensive scheme and offensive firepower proving too much for a struggling Presbyterian squad from the opening tip. The Panthers’ first-quarter explosion was the definitive stretch, ensuring the outcome was never in doubt and allowing them to manage rotations and minutes throughout the second half.
