Toledo Routs Buffalo in MAC Women’s Basketball Opener
TOLEDO, Ohio (Interstat) — The Toledo Rockets used a dominant second quarter and a career-high scoring performance from guard Patricia Anumgba to overwhelm the Buffalo Bulls 79-46 in a Mid-American Conference women’s basketball game Wednesday afternoon at Savage Hall.
A crowd of 3,860 saw the Rockets improve to 6-5 overall, while the Bulls fell to 2-10.
The game’s decisive stretch came in the second period. Leading 19-13 after one quarter, Toledo outscored Buffalo 22-6 in the second to take a commanding 41-19 halftime lead. The Rockets’ defense stifled the Bulls, holding them to just two made field goals in the quarter on 2-of-14 shooting. Toledo, meanwhile, shot 50% from the floor in the period and forced six Buffalo turnovers, converting them into 10 points.
Anumgba, a sophomore from Silver Spring, Maryland, was the catalyst. She scored 12 of her game-high 21 points in the second quarter, including a pair of three-pointers. She finished the afternoon shooting 8-of-14 from the field and added five rebounds and two assists in just 21 minutes of action.
The Rockets continued to pull away after halftime, extending their lead to as many as 35 points in the second half. They outscored Buffalo 26-11 in the third quarter, powered by efficient offense that saw them shoot 10-of-17 from the field in the period.
Toledo’s offensive balance was evident. Alongside Anumgba, Kendall Carruthers, a Toledo native, contributed 16 points, five rebounds and three assists. Faith Fedd-Robinson anchored the interior with seven points, nine rebounds and three blocks. The Rockets shared the ball effectively, with Cadence Dykstra dishing out a game-high five assists to go with seven points and six rebounds.
Defensively, Toledo was formidable, blocking seven shots and holding Buffalo to 30% shooting overall. The Bulls struggled mightily from beyond the arc, making only 2 of 12 attempts, and from the free-throw line, converting just 2 of 7. Buffalo’s offensive rating of 57.3 on 80 possessions underscored the difficulty of scoring against the Rockets’ set defense.
Buffalo, which never led, was led by Diann Jackson’s seven points off the bench. Janyah Bohanon added six points, five rebounds and two blocks. The Bulls turned the ball over 13 times, which Toledo converted into 17 points, and were outscored 44-26 in the paint.
The victory gives Toledo momentum as it heads into the heart of its MAC schedule. The Rockets, who were projected as heavy favorites by advanced metrics pregame, executed efficiently on both ends, posting an offensive rating of 104.2. The loss extends a difficult non-conference stretch for Buffalo, which has now lost eight of its last nine games.
Toledo next travels to face Miami (Ohio) on Saturday. Buffalo continues its road trip at Western Michigan on Saturday.
