Warriors Rally Past Mountaineers Behind Roman’s Double-Double

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive pressure and offensive struggles, the Merrimack Warriors used a dominant third-quarter surge to overcome a halftime deficit and edge the Mount Saint Mary’s Mountaineers 60-56 in a non-conference women’s basketball game Monday afternoon at Volpe Athletic Center.

The contest, played before an announced crowd of 351, saw both teams combine for 43 turnovers and shoot under 31% from the field. The difference came at the free-throw line, where Merrimack converted 16 of 23 attempts while Mount Saint Mary’s managed just 7 of 13.

Mount Saint Mary’s (6-6) controlled the first half, building a 29-22 lead by intermission behind a balanced attack and forcing 13 Merrimack turnovers. The Mountaineers led by as many as nine points in the second quarter, capitalizing on a frigid shooting stretch from the Warriors, who scored only eight points in the period.

The most important part of the game arrived immediately after halftime. Merrimack (4-7) erupted for a 23-point third quarter, completely flipping the momentum. The Warriors opened the second half on a 13-4 run to take their first lead since the opening minutes. They relentlessly attacked the paint and drew fouls, scoring 11 points from the free-throw line in the quarter alone. Meanwhile, the Mountaineers’ offense stalled, committing seven turnovers in the period that fueled the Merrimack transition game.

Merrimack’s star performance came from Madison Roman, who rebounded from a quiet outing in her previous game to post a dominant double-double. The 6-foot sophomore from Fairfield, Connecticut, played 38 minutes, scoring a game-high 20 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. She was instrumental in the third-quarter turnaround, scoring seven points and adding key defensive plays.

Roman was complemented by center Oralye Kiefer, a 6-3 freshman from Wayland, Massachusetts, who recorded a double-double of her own with 14 points and 11 rebounds, along with two blocks. Guard Lydia Melashenko of Ottawa, Canada, added 13 points and nine rebounds, hitting three critical 3-pointers, all during Merrimack’s second-half rally.

Mount Saint Mary’s was led by Gabrielle Kennerly’s 18 points, though the guard from Charlotte, North Carolina, shot 6 of 22 from the field, including 5 of 17 from 3-point range. Berlynn Carlson, a 6-3 freshman from Beaverton, Oregon, provided 11 points and six rebounds off the bench. Forward Erin Edmonds of Hopewell, Virginia, just missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds, and contributed three blocked shots.

The Mountaineers fought to reclaim the lead in the fourth quarter, closing to within 55-52 on a 3-pointer from Erin Edmonds with 1:25 remaining. After a Madison Roman layup extended Merrimack’s lead to five, Kennerly answered with a deep 3-pointer to make it 57-55 with 13 seconds left.

Merrimack’s composure at the foul line sealed the victory. Oralye Kiefer was fouled and made one of two free throws with 12 seconds left for a three-point lead. Following a Mountaineers timeout, Kennerly’s potential game-tying 3-point attempt missed, and Lydia Melashenko secured the defensive rebound. She was fouled and made both free throws with six seconds remaining to provide the final margin.

Statistically, the game was a mirror image of inefficiency. Mount Saint Mary’s finished 20 of 61 from the field (32.8%) and 9 of 29 from 3-point range. Merrimack was equally cold, shooting 20 of 66 overall (30.3%) and just 4 of 23 from beyond the arc. The Warriors won the battle on the glass 49-44, including a 16-10 advantage in offensive rebounds.

Both teams now turn their attention to conference play. Mount Saint Mary’s travels to face Siena on Thursday to open its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference schedule. Merrimack, a member of the MAAC for basketball, will also begin league play on Thursday at Rider. The two teams are scheduled for a rematch in Emmitsburg, Maryland, on Jan. 24.
