UC Irvine Dominates UC Riverside in Big West Women’s Basketball Matchup
RIVERSIDE, Calif. (Interstat) — The UC Irvine women’s basketball team delivered a defensive masterpiece Thursday night, overwhelming UC Riverside from the opening tip and cruising to a 77-40 victory in a Big West Conference matchup at the UCR Rec Center.
The Anteaters, improving to 7-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play, held the Highlanders to a historically low offensive output, forcing 24 turnovers and blocking nine shots. UC Riverside’s 40 points marked a season-low for a UC Irvine opponent and the Highlanders’ lowest scoring total in recent memory. The home team fell to 1-6 overall and 0-1 in the Big West before an announced crowd of 115.
From the outset, the Anteaters set a suffocating tone. UC Irvine scored the game’s first 14 points, holding UC Riverside scoreless for nearly the first six minutes of play. The Highlanders did not make a field goal until Hannah Wickstrom’s layup with 6:11 remaining in the opening quarter, by which time they already trailed 14-2. The first quarter ended with UC Irvine leading 20-6, and the margin only grew from there. A stifling second quarter saw the Anteaters limit Riverside to just five points, taking a 36-11 lead into halftime.
The Anteaters’ defense was relentless, converting Riverside’s mistakes into opportunities. UC Irvine tallied 15 steals, leading to numerous fast-break chances. Offensively, the Anteaters were efficient, scoring exactly one point per possession for an offensive rating of 100.0. They shot 41.7% from the field and a stellar 85.7% from the free-throw line.
Jada Wynn, a 6-foot-1 forward from Yorba Linda, Calif., led all scorers with 15 points. She filled the stat sheet comprehensively, adding four assists, two blocks, and a game-high six defensive rebounds in just 30 minutes of action. Her backcourt partner, Hunter Hernandez of San Jose, Calif., provided a game-high 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting.
UC Irvine’s depth was on full display. Shirel Nahum of Ra’anana, Israel, and Ameerah Grant of Brown Deer, Wis., each contributed 11 points. Lauryn Madsen of Warden, Wash., scored eight points, dished out three assists, and recorded two blocks. Reese Noa and Haley Hernandez, both coming off the bench, added eight points apiece.
For UC Riverside, the struggles were comprehensive. The team shot a frigid 24.1% from the field and just 17.4% from three-point range. They managed an offensive rating of only 51.4 points per 100 possessions. Wickstrom, a guard from Melbourne, Australia, was the lone Highlander in double figures with 14 points. Maya Chocano of Toronto, Canada, added eight points.
The Anteaters’ defensive pressure never relented, as they built the lead to as many as 37 points in the fourth quarter. The third quarter was UC Riverside’s most productive, but they were still outscored 16-15. The Anteaters then closed the game with a 25-point fourth quarter to seal the emphatic road win.
The victory continues a strong early-season run for UC Irvine, which has now won five of its last six games, including a 82-48 win over Colgate last Saturday. The Anteaters look to carry this momentum into their next contest at Cal State Northridge on Saturday.
UC Riverside, which secured its only win of the season against Division III Cal Lutheran, will seek to regroup at home against Cal Poly on Saturday.
According to Interstat’s ELO system, UC Irvine entered the game with a 72.7% probability to win, a projection the Anteaters surpassed with their dominant performance on both ends of the court. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Irvine on Jan. 22.
