Appalachian State at UNC Asheville

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (Interstat) — Appalachian State looks to rebound from a lopsided road loss when it visits in-state foe UNC Asheville in a nonconference women’s basketball game Saturday.

The Mountaineers (3-2) are coming off an 80-51 defeat at West Virginia on Thursday. Emma Smith led the team with 17 points in the loss. Appalachian State has shown a potent offense this season, including a 110-point outing in its opener, but was held to 51 and 55 points in its two defeats.

The Bulldogs (2-2) enter with momentum after a 67-50 road victory over Western Carolina on Wednesday. Kristen McMillan and Aileen Marquez each scored 16 points in the win. UNC Asheville’s two losses have come against Mercer and North Carolina Central.

This matchup at Kimmel Arena pits two teams with identical 2-2 records against Division I competition. Appalachian State will rely on Smith and Daisia Mitchell, who nearly posted a double-double against West Virginia. The Bulldogs will counter with the scoring duo of McMillan and Marquez.

The game is the first of a two-game road trip for the Mountaineers, who host Norfolk State on Tuesday. UNC Asheville remains at home to face Wofford on Tuesday.
