Panthers Rally Past Colonials in City Game

PITTSBURGH (Interstat) — A dominant second-half performance propelled the Pittsburgh Panthers to a 63-54 victory over the Robert Morris Colonials in a non-conference women’s basketball game on Saturday at Petersen Events Center.

Trailing by a significant margin after a disastrous first quarter, the Panthers methodically chipped away at the deficit before seizing control after halftime, outscoring the Colonials 24-10 in the pivotal third quarter.

Robert Morris came out with explosive energy, opening the game on a 14-0 run and outscoring Pittsburgh 27-8 in the first quarter. The Colonials’ early offense was fueled by efficient ball movement and sharp outside shooting, building a lead that seemed to stun the home team.

However, the game began to turn in the second quarter as Pittsburgh’s defense tightened. The Panthers started generating turnovers and converting them into points, outscoring Robert Morris 19-11 in the period to cut the Colonials’ lead to 38-27 at the break.

The third quarter belonged entirely to Pittsburgh. The Panthers opened the half with a 14-2 run, erasing the Robert Morris advantage and taking their first lead of the game. Mikayla Johnson was instrumental in the surge, scoring from inside and outside as the Panthers’ offense found its rhythm while their defense completely stifled the Colonials, holding them to just 10 points in the quarter.

Robert Morris struggled to find an answer offensively after the first quarter, managing only six points in the final period as Pittsburgh closed out the game.

Johnson, a 6-foot-1 forward from Anchorage, Alaska, led all scorers with 20 points, playing all but five minutes of the contest. She was a consistent force for the Panthers, especially during their second-half comeback. Angel Jones provided crucial support, adding 14 points and three assists from her guard position.

For Robert Morris, the backcourt duo of Aislin Malcolm and Jada Lee, both local products from Carnegie and Pittsburgh, respectively, led the way with 11 points apiece. Malcolm also dished out five assists. Forward Ava Leroux of Bridgeville added 10 points.

Pittsburgh’s interior presence was a key factor, as they outscored Robert Morris 34-24 in the paint and capitalized on mistakes, scoring 15 points off turnovers compared to just five for the Colonials. The Panthers also benefited from a strong defensive effort from Fatima Diakhate of Dakar, Senegal, who contributed nine points and two blocks.

The loss was the first of the season for Robert Morris, which fell to 4-1. The Colonials had opened the season with four straight wins, including a narrow victory over crosstown rival Duquesne earlier in the week.

Pittsburgh improved its record to 4-2 with the win, bouncing back from a surprising home loss to Scranton just days prior.

An announced crowd of 839 was on hand at the Petersen Events Center to witness the city rivalry game.

Robert Morris looks to rebound on the road against Eastern Michigan on Wednesday. Pittsburgh remains at home to host Lafayette on Tuesday.
