Eastern Michigan at Canisius
BUFFALO, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Eastern Michigan Eagles delivered a commanding defensive performance to secure their first victory of the season, routing the Canisius Golden Griffins in a non-conference women’s basketball game Friday night at the Koessler Athletic Center.
Eastern Michigan dominated from the opening tip, establishing a 22-2 lead after the first quarter and never looking back. The Eagles’ defense was suffocating, holding the Golden Griffins to a historically low scoring output while forcing numerous turnovers that fueled their own offense.
The Eagles improved their record to 1-1, while Canisius dropped to 0-2.
Eastern Michigan’s victory was built on overwhelming advantages in key statistical categories. The Eagles outscored Canisius 42-6 in the paint and capitalized on Golden Griffin mistakes, converting turnovers into 28 points. The defensive pressure was relentless, holding Canisius to single-digit scoring in two of the four quarters.
Believe Tshibangu led a balanced Eastern Michigan scoring attack with 14 points and nine rebounds in just 15 minutes of play. Sisi Eleko recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Peyton Hill and Brooklyn Thrash each added 12 points. Ainhoa Cea facilitated the offense, dishing out five assists.
For Canisius, Irene Rey Pineda scored 12 points and Shariah Gailes added 11 points and six rebounds. The Golden Griffins struggled to find any offensive rhythm against the Eagles’ staunch defense.
The game’s outcome was a stark contrast to pregame projections. Interstat’s ELO system had given Canisius a 77.80 percent probability to win, and its game simulator had projected a high-scoring tie.
Eastern Michigan looks to build on the momentum Sunday when it travels to face Michigan State. Canisius will attempt to rebound on the road Tuesday against Syracuse.
The announced attendance was 809.
