IU Indy Rallies Past Oakland in Defensive Struggle

INDIANAPOLIS (Interstat) — A commanding early lead evaporated into a stunning fourth-quarter collapse for the Oakland women’s basketball team Wednesday night, as the IU Indy Jaguars rallied for a 64-57 Horizon League victory at Fairgrounds Coliseum.

The Golden Grizzlies, who led by as many as 10 points in the first half and entered the final period with a 54-50 advantage, were held to a mere three points in the fourth quarter. Oakland missed 12 of its 13 field goal attempts and committed six turnovers in the final 10 minutes, allowing the Jaguars to close the game on a 14-3 run.

The most important part of the game was Oakland’s complete offensive shutdown in the fourth quarter. After trading baskets with IU Indy through three periods, the Golden Grizzlies’ attack disintegrated. They managed only a single field goal—a Makenzie Luehring turnaround jumper with 6:53 remaining—and one free throw the rest of the way. Meanwhile, IU Indy, despite its own shooting struggles, capitalized at the free-throw line and generated key turnovers to secure the win.

Oakland built its lead on efficient inside scoring, finishing with 38 points in the paint. Layla Gold, a hometown product from Indianapolis, led the Golden Grizzlies with 14 points. Filippa Goula, from Ano Liosia, Greece, added 14 points and a game-high six assists, while Luehring contributed 15 points. The trio combined for 43 of Oakland’s 57 points.

IU Indy was propelled by the backcourt duo of Nevaeh Foster and Destini Craig. Foster, from South Bend, scored a game-high 17 points, including three 3-pointers. Craig, from Fort Wayne, added 15 points, three assists and a critical four steals. Her defensive pressure was instrumental in Oakland’s late-game struggles.

The Jaguars overcame poor overall shooting by dominating at the free-throw line and converting Oakland’s mistakes into points. IU Indy attempted 34 free throws, making 21, while Oakland went 10 for 12. More critically, the Jaguars scored 25 points off 20 Oakland turnovers, compared to just 11 points off turnovers for the Golden Grizzlies.

Oakland started strong, shooting 60% in the first quarter to take a 24-20 lead. They extended it to 40-31 late in the second quarter before IU Indy closed the half on a 7-0 spurt to trail 40-38. The third quarter was a tight affair, with Oakland maintaining a slim lead until the final frame.

The victory improved IU Indy to 11-13 overall. The Jaguars’ next game is at home against Youngstown State on Sunday. Oakland fell to 8-16 and will host Wright State on Saturday. The game was a rematch of a Jan. 28 contest, which Oakland won 64-61 in Rochester. An announced crowd of 315 attended the Horizon League matchup.
