Albany Topples Saint Bonaventure in Women’s Basketball
KNAPP CREEK, N.Y. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by cold shooting and frequent turnovers, the Albany women’s basketball team used a dominant first half to secure a 62-53 victory over previously unbeaten Saint Bonaventure on Saturday at the Reilly Center.
The Great Danes, improving to 4-2, held the Bonnies to just seven points in the opening quarter and built a commanding 32-17 lead by halftime. Saint Bonaventure, which entered the contest with a 5-0 record, fell to 5-1 as their offense never fully recovered from the early deficit, despite a more competitive second half.
Albany’s defense set the tone from the opening tip, forcing Saint Bonaventure into a series of early miscues. The Bonnies managed only two made field goals in the first quarter, a three-pointer from Laycee Drake and a layup from Aaliyah Parker. Albany, while not shooting lights out itself, capitalized on enough opportunities to take an 11-7 lead after one period.
The second quarter saw the Great Danes begin to pull away, outscoring the Bonnies 21-10. A key sequence featured back-to-back three-pointers from Julia Palomo, one assisted by Delanie Hill, which stretched the Albany lead. The Great Danes closed the half with a dramatic buzzer-beating three-pointer from Anais Levasseur, assisted by Hill, sending the visitors into the locker room with significant momentum and a 15-point advantage.
Saint Bonaventure emerged from the break with more energy, outscoring Albany 17-15 in the third quarter. Aaliyah Parker, the Bonnies’ standout from Cheektowaga, N.Y., was instrumental in the push, attacking the basket and drawing fouls. However, every time the Bonnies threatened to cut the lead to single digits, Albany found an answer, often from Hill or Amaya Stewart.
The fourth quarter was the highest-scoring period for both teams, with Saint Bonaventure putting up 19 points to Albany’s 15. The Bonnies managed to trim the lead to as few as nine points, but could get no closer. Albany’s composure from the free-throw line in the final minutes, including two clutch makes from Delanie Hill, sealed the victory.
The game was ultimately decided by efficiency, or lack thereof. While the final score was close, the underlying statistics told a story of Albany’s superior control. The Great Danes scored 62 points on 64 possessions, for an offensive rating of 96.7. The Bonnies were less effective, managing only 53 points on 67 possessions, an offensive rating of 79.5.
A stark disparity from beyond the arc was a critical factor. Albany connected on 6 of 18 three-point attempts, while Saint Bonaventure was an ice-cold 2 of 15 from deep. The Bonnies did their best to stay in the game by converting 13 of 14 free throws, but their inability to score from the field proved insurmountable.
Turnovers were also a problem for the home team, as Saint Bonaventure committed 17 giveaways compared to Albany’s 13. The Great Danes also won the battle on the glass, securing eight offensive rebounds to the Bonnies’ five.
Individually, Albany was led by a balanced and efficient attack. Delanie Hill, a guard from Charlotte, N.C., filled the stat sheet with 15 points, five rebounds and four assists in 31 minutes. Forward Amaya Stewart of West Reading, Pa., was a force inside, contributing 14 points and seven rebounds.
For Saint Bonaventure, Aaliyah Parker shouldered the scoring load with a game-high 18 points to go along with seven rebounds. Ivona Djikanovic of Belgrade, Serbia, provided a second-half spark, finishing with 13 points.
The announced attendance at the Reilly Center was 413. Albany’s next game is at home against Rensselaer on Wednesday. Saint Bonaventure looks to rebound on the road at Cleveland State, also on Wednesday.
