Princeton Defeats Harvard in Ivy League Women’s Basketball Showdown
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined more by grit than grace, the Princeton Tigers methodically pulled away from the Harvard Crimson for a 62-49 victory in an Ivy League women’s basketball contest Saturday night at Lavietes Pavilion.
The game, witnessed by 1,636 fans, was a rematch of a January overtime thriller won by Princeton. This encounter lacked the late drama but showcased a commanding defensive performance by the visiting Tigers, who held Harvard to its second-lowest scoring output of the season and a frigid 29.8% shooting from the floor.
Princeton improved to 23-3 overall and solidified its position atop the Ivy League standings. Harvard fell to 16-10.
The contest’s pivotal stretch arrived late in the second quarter and established a template Princeton would follow the rest of the way. Leading 22-19 with under three minutes to play in the half, the Tigers clamped down. They forced Harvard into three consecutive turnovers and held the Crimson scoreless for the final 2:44 of the period. During that span, Princeton’s Skye Belker converted a tough pull-up jumper while being fouled, and Madison St. Rose sank a jumper just before the halftime buzzer. The 6-0 run sent the Tigers into the locker room with a 27-22 lead, a margin built not on explosive offense but on persistent defensive pressure.
Harvard never seriously threatened that lead in the second half. The Crimson closed to within five points on several occasions, but each time Princeton had an answer, usually from junior forward Fadima Tall. The Silver Spring, Maryland, native was the game’s dominant force, scoring a game-high 18 points on efficient 8-of-14 shooting and anchoring the Tigers’ interior defense with her presence.
After a Karlee White three-pointer brought Harvard to 30-25 early in the third quarter, Tall responded with back-to-back layups to push the lead back to nine. When Harvard’ Abigail Wright scored inside to make it 36-30, Tall again finished at the rim. Her consistent production in the paint was crucial on a night where Princeton’s three-point shot was largely absent, as the team made only 2 of 11 from beyond the arc.
Princeton’s defense was the story, however. The Tigers, despite being out-assisted eight to four and out-blocked eight to five, won the turnover battle, forcing Harvard into 15 miscues while committing 11. More critically, they contested every Harvard look, with the Crimson finishing 7 of 27 from three-point range and managing only 24 points in the paint against Princeton’s length. Harvard’s offensive rating of 72.9 points per 100 possessions underscored the Tigers’ defensive effectiveness.
Tall received key support from backcourt mates Belker and Ashley Chea. Belker, a guard from Los Angeles, added 13 points, while Chea, from Montebello, California, chipped in 12. Olivia Hutcherson contributed seven points and three blocks in 36 minutes of work.
For Harvard, Karlee White led the way with 10 points, but shot just 4 of 12 from the field. Katie Krupa and Nina Emnace each added seven points, but the Crimson’s leading scorers were hampered by Princeton’s switching defenses and relentless close-outs. Harvard’s 11 offensive rebounds yielded only limited second-chance points against a set Princeton defense.
The Tigers sealed the game from the free-throw line in the final quarter, making 9 of 12 attempts. Tall was central to this effort, making four consecutive free throws in the final 31 seconds to extinguish any faint Harvard hope.
Princeton’s victory completed a regular-season sweep of the Crimson, having also won an 82-79 overtime decision at home on Jan. 19. The Tigers have now won 12 of their last 13 games, their only loss in that span a road defeat at Columbia. Harvard, which had won four of its last five, saw its momentum halted.
Both teams conclude their regular seasons next Saturday. Princeton will host Yale, while Harvard travels to face Columbia.
