ARLINGTON, Texas (Interstat) — Filipa Barros scored 23 points and dished out seven assists to lead California Baptist to a 79-72 victory over Texas-Arlington in a women’s college basketball game Thursday night at College Park Center.

The Lancers, who swept the season series from the Mavericks, improved to 18-10 overall. Texas-Arlington fell to 10-18.

Barros, a 5-foot-9 guard from Vermoim, Portugal, was the catalyst throughout, adding a key steal and five rebounds in 38 minutes of action. Her backcourt partner, Lauren Olsen of Douglas, Wyoming, contributed 17 points, three assists and two blocks. Grace Schmidt of Ixonia, Wisconsin, provided a major interior presence with 20 points on efficient shooting.

The Mavericks were led by Jadyn Atchison’s 19 points, while Kali Haizlip added 14. Nya Threatt, a guard from Missouri City, Texas, finished with 10 points.

California Baptist established control with a strong first half, leading 40-31 at the break. The Lancers opened the game on a 9-2 run, capped by an early 3-pointer from Shawnee Nordstrom. Texas-Arlington stayed within striking distance behind early free throws from Alexsyah Goudeau and a 3-pointer from Haizlip, but the Lancers closed the first quarter with a 5-0 spurt to lead 19-18.

The second quarter proved decisive. With the Mavericks trailing 20-18, California Baptist unleashed a 12-0 run over a three-minute span to seize a commanding 32-20 advantage. Barros ignited the surge with a driving layup and then buried a 3-pointer. Schmidt scored six points during the run, including two layups off assists from Barros and Sofia Alonso. The Lancers’ defense was equally stifling, forcing multiple turnovers and blocked shots from Reyleigh Hess and Olsen during the pivotal stretch.

Texas-Arlington fought back in the third quarter, matching California Baptist’s 23 points to keep the deficit at nine heading into the final period. The Mavericks pulled within seven points on several occasions in the fourth, the last time at 64-57 on a Haizlip 3-pointer with 7:55 remaining.

Each time, the Lancers had an answer. After the Mavericks cut the lead to 70-66 on a Kendal Robinson layup with 2:07 left, Olsen responded with a driving layup on the next possession. Barros then iced the game at the free-throw line, making four consecutive foul shots in the final 1:15 to secure the seven-point win.

The game was a defensive struggle at times, with both teams combining for 15 blocked shots. California Baptist’s Emma Johansson and Hess each recorded two blocks, while Texas-Arlington’s Kira Reynolds also had two.

The Lancers have now won three of their last four games. They will continue their road trip at Tarleton State on Saturday. Texas-Arlington, which has lost four straight, will host Tarleton State on March 5.

An announced crowd of 637 attended the game at the 7,000-seat College Park Center.
