Anderson’s 23 Points Lead Georgia Southern Women Past Marshall
STATESBORO, Ga. (Interstat) — A dominant first-quarter blitz and a career-high 23 points from Kishyah Anderson propelled Georgia Southern to a commanding 76-55 victory over Marshall in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Thursday night at Hanner Fieldhouse.
The Eagles, improving to 19-6, seized control from the opening tip and never looked back, building a 26-10 lead after the first quarter. The Thundering Herd, which entered the contest with a 22-6 record, could not recover from the early deficit despite a 21-point effort from Timaya Lewis-Eutsey.
Anderson, a 5-foot-10 guard from Phoenix, Arizona, was the catalyst for Georgia Southern’s explosive start and consistent force throughout. She played 40 minutes, shooting efficiently from the field and adding two assists. Her performance set the tone, as the Eagles shot out to a 12-2 run in the first five minutes and closed the period on a 9-2 spurt to establish a 16-point cushion.
Marshall showed signs of life in the second quarter, outscoring Georgia Southern 23-20 behind 10 points from Lewis-Eutsey. The Trenton, New Jersey, native repeatedly attacked the basket to keep her team within striking distance, cutting the deficit to 13 points at halftime. The Herd’s rally, however, was consistently answered by the Eagles’ balanced attack.
Any hope of a Marshall comeback was extinguished in a defensively stifling third quarter. Georgia Southern limited the Herd to just eight points on 3-of-13 shooting while forcing six turnovers. Though the Eagles only managed eight points themselves in the period, their defensive intensity snuffed out Marshall’s momentum, preserving a 54-41 lead entering the final frame.
The Eagles then put the game away decisively in the fourth quarter, erupting for 22 points. Anderson scored 10 in the period, including a personal 6-0 run early that pushed the lead to 60-45. Georgia Southern’s ball movement and interior passing proved too much, as they shot over 50% from the floor in the quarter to pull away.
Beyond Anderson’s standout night, Georgia Southern received significant contributions from its supporting cast. McKenna Eddings of Williamsburg, Virginia, scored 16 points, grabbed three rebounds, and blocked two shots. Destiny Garrett of Bessemer, Alabama, filled the stat sheet with 14 points, three assists, three steals, and a block. Kayla Cleaveland of Woodstock, Georgia, added 13 points, three assists, and two blocks, providing a critical two-way presence.
For Marshall, Lewis-Eutsey’s 21 points and four assists were a bright spot on an otherwise difficult offensive night. Timberlynn Yeast of Harrodsburg, Kentucky, contributed seven points and three steals, while Aarionna Redman came off the bench to score seven points in 14 minutes. The Herd struggled with Georgia Southern’s length and pressure, committing 18 turnovers that led to 24 points for the Eagles.
The most important sequence of the game was undoubtedly Georgia Southern’s opening-quarter onslaught. The Eagles scored on their first four possessions, including a layup by Jamiria Jones off a steal and a three-pointer by Eddings. They established an immediate pace and physicality that Marshall could not match, shooting 60% from the field in the quarter while holding the Herd to 28% shooting. This early dominance allowed Georgia Southern to play from ahead for the entire contest, dictating the tempo and forcing Marshall into an uphill battle it never solved.
The announced attendance was 1,009. Marshall falls to 22-7 and will look to rebound on the road at Georgia State on Saturday. Georgia Southern, now 19-6, will host Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday before a rematch with the Thundering Herd in Huntington next Friday.
