Lamar Holds Off Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in Defensive Struggle
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined more by grit than grace, the Lamar Lady Cardinals grinded out a 58-52 victory over the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Saturday at American Bank Center.
The contest, played before a crowd of 1,089, saw Lamar improve to 15-9 overall while Texas A&M-Corpus Christi fell to 4-20.
Neither team found a consistent offensive rhythm, with both finishing below 37 percent shooting from the floor. Lamar’s ability to force turnovers and capitalize on second chances proved decisive. The Lady Cardinals scored 20 points off 18 Islanders turnovers and held a 13-9 edge in offensive rebounds, leading to a 30-20 advantage in points in the paint.
The game’s pivotal sequence arrived late in the third quarter. After a back-and-forth first half that saw Texas A&M-Corpus Christi take a 27-25 lead into the break, Lamar’s defense ignited a game-changing run. The Lady Cardinals opened the third quarter with a 9-0 spurt, fueled by consecutive steals and transition scores from T’Aaliyah Miner. That burst gave Lamar a 34-27 lead, a margin they would not relinquish.
The Islanders, led by Chelsea Wooten’s 13 points and Torie Sevier’s all-around effort of eight points, seven rebounds and four blocks, managed to close the gap to four points on multiple occasions in the final period. Each time, Lamar answered with a key defensive stop or a critical basket.
Kamryn Wilson led Lamar with 12 points and eight rebounds. Molly Powell added 10 points and six rebounds, while Solenne Olenga controlled the glass with 11 rebounds. Miner finished with nine points and three steals, her defensive pressure in the third quarter serving as the game’s turning point.
For Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Marissa Shelton scored 11 points and dished out four assists. Rayna Williams pulled down nine rebounds.
Lamar’s defense was relentless, recording 12 steals and holding the Islanders to an offensive rating of 79.8 points per 100 possessions. While Lamar’s own offensive efficiency was only marginally better at 86.1, it was sufficient on a afternoon where defensive execution took precedence.
The Lady Cardinals, who had lost two of their last three games entering the contest, steadied themselves with this road victory. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, struggling through a difficult season, showed resilience but was ultimately undone by Lamar’s defensive pressure during the critical third-quarter swing.
Lamar next hosts Nicholls State on Thursday. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi travels to face Southeastern Louisiana, also on Thursday.
