Coppin State Women Dominate South Carolina State in MEAC Matchup
ORANGEBURG, S.C. (Interstat) — In a commanding wire-to-wire victory, the Coppin State women’s basketball team delivered a decisive 72-39 win over South Carolina State on Thursday night at SHM Memorial Center, avenging a loss from earlier in the season.
The Eagles established their dominance from the opening tip, racing to a 16-5 lead after the first quarter and never looking back. Coppin State’s defense was suffocating, holding the Bulldogs to single-digit scoring in two quarters and a meager 16 points in the entire first half. The visiting Eagles led 33-16 at halftime and extended their advantage in every subsequent period, culminating in a 22-point fourth quarter to seal the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory.
The most important part of the game was the opening stretch, where Coppin State’s defensive intensity and offensive execution immediately put the game out of reach. The Eagles forced multiple early turnovers and missed shots by South Carolina State, converting them into transition opportunities. A steal and layup by Shanaii Gamble followed by a Paris McBride three-pointer set the tone within the first minute. By the time South Carolina State registered its first point—a free throw nearly four minutes into the game—Coppin State had already built a 7-0 lead. This initial burst deflated the home team and allowed the Eagles to play with confidence and control for the remaining 36 minutes.
Khila Morris led all scorers with 22 points for Coppin State, adding three assists and two blocks in 31 minutes of work. Paris McBride contributed 16 points, while Shanaii Gamble and Skylar Barnes added 11 and 12 points, respectively. The Eagles’ balanced attack proved too much for a struggling South Carolina State offense.
The Bulldogs were led defensively by Ja’Siiyah Holmes, who recorded three blocks, but the team struggled to find any consistent scoring. No South Carolina State player reached double figures, with Holmes and Feliah Greer leading the way with just five points each. The Bulldogs shot poorly from the field throughout the contest, a testament to Coppin State’s persistent defensive pressure.
The victory improves Coppin State’s record to 8-18 overall and continues a positive trend in MEAC play, while South Carolina State falls to 5-18. The Eagles have now won four of their last five conference games, a stark turnaround from their non-conference struggles. This win also served as payback for a 58-47 loss to the Bulldogs in Baltimore just over a month ago on Jan. 8.
A crowd of 150 watched as Coppin State methodically dismantled the home team. The Eagles’ performance was a model of efficiency, leveraging defensive stops into offensive opportunities and maintaining focus despite the large lead.
Coppin State will look to continue its momentum on the road against North Carolina Central on Saturday. South Carolina State’s next contest is at home against North Carolina Central on Wednesday.
The lopsided result was in line with pregame analytics, which heavily favored the visiting Eagles. Coppin State played to that expectation, delivering one of its most complete performances of the season to secure the convincing conference road win.
