Sam Houston Rallies Past Missouri State in Conference USA Women’s Basketball

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (Interstat) — In a game defined by a staggering disparity in ball security, the Sam Houston Bearkats capitalized on a torrent of Missouri State turnovers to secure a 74-67 victory in a Conference USA women’s basketball clash on Thursday night at Johnson Coliseum.

The visiting Missouri State Lady Bears, despite shooting a superior 49 percent from the floor and outscoring Sam Houston 38-30 in the paint, committed 26 turnovers. The Bearkats, with a relentless defensive effort, converted those miscues into 41 points, the decisive factor in the contest. Sam Houston, by contrast, gave the ball away only seven times, leading to just two points for Missouri State.

The game’s pivotal sequence unfolded in the third quarter. Missouri State, which had built a 39-30 halftime lead behind efficient offense, saw its game unravel with a cascade of mistakes. Sam Houston opened the second half on a 16-2 run, fueled almost entirely by Lady Bear turnovers. The Bearkats’ pressure, led by guard Fanta Kone, repeatedly disrupted Missouri State’s offensive flow, turning steals into easy transition opportunities.

Kone, a junior from Bamako, Mali, was the catalyst for Sam Houston. She finished with 19 points, eight assists, and a game-high five steals, orchestrating the offense and spearheading the defensive onslaught. Her backcourt partner, Annika Corcoran, added 13 points, while Deborah Ogayemi and Whitney Dunn each chipped in 11. Dunn also contributed a critical late block.

Missouri State was led by Kaemyn Bekemeier’s 21 points, though she also accounted for seven of her team’s turnovers. Lainie Douglas added 14 points and Faith Lee scored 13, but the Lady Bears’ offensive rhythm was shattered by Sam Houston’s defensive intensity. The Lady Bears managed only four assists as a team, a stark contrast to Sam Houston’s 12.

The first half belonged to Missouri State, which led 18-15 after one quarter and extended its advantage to nine by the break. The Lady Bears shot 60 percent in the second quarter. However, the third-quarter collapse, where they were outscored 20-11, handed Sam Houston control.

Sam Houston sealed the game at the free-throw line, making 24 of 33 attempts compared to Missouri State’s 13 of 17. The Bearkats shot just 35.5 percent from the field but attempted 11 more shots than the Lady Bears, a direct result of their turnover margin.

With the win, Sam Houston improved to 15-7 overall. Missouri State fell to 15-9. The teams are scheduled for a rematch in Springfield, Missouri, on Tuesday, Feb. 24.

The victory defied pregame analytics, as Interstat’s ELO system had projected Missouri State with a 70.9 percent probability to win. An announced crowd of 545 watched at Johnson Coliseum.
