Texas A&M Upsets Alabama in SEC Women’s Basketball Thriller
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (Interstat) — In a Southeastern Conference clash defined by grit over grace, the Texas A&M women’s basketball team authored a resilient upset, edging Alabama 72-69 on Sunday at Reed Arena. The Aggies, leaning on a monumental performance from guard Ny’Ceara Pryor and a staunch defensive effort in the final minute, snapped a three-game skid and handed the Crimson Tide a costly road defeat.
From the opening tip, the game established a pattern of physical, back-and-forth play. Alabama, entering as a significant favorite, found consistent offense difficult to generate against Texas A&M’s active defense. The Aggies built a slim 34-29 halftime lead behind Pryor’s orchestration and the interior presence of Lauren Ware and Fatmata Janneh.
The third quarter saw Alabama, one of the SEC’s top offensive teams, finally ignite. The Crimson Tide erupted for 25 points in the period, overtaking the Aggies with a surge led by Jessica Timmons and Ta’Mia Scott. A three-pointer from Scott at the third-quarter buzzer gave Alabama a 54-53 lead, its first since the opening minutes, and seemed to swing momentum firmly toward the visitors.
The final quarter evolved into a tense, possession-by-possession struggle. Alabama extended its lead to four points on multiple occasions, but Texas A&M refused to relent. Pryor, the 5-foot-3 dynamo from Baltimore, was the catalyst, answering every Alabama push with a critical drive, assist, or drawn foul. With just over a minute remaining and Texas A&M clinging to a 67-65 lead, the game turned on a pivotal defensive sequence. Alabama’s Diana Collins was called for a three-second violation, handing possession back to the Aggies. On the ensuing trip, Pryor calmly sank a mid-range jumper to extend the lead to four with 62 seconds left.
Alabama’s Naomi Jones scored inside to cut the deficit to 69-67, but Pryor was fouled and made two pressure-packed free throws with six seconds left to restore a four-point edge. Karly Weathers scored a quick layup for Alabama to make it 71-69 with three seconds remaining, but Pryor was fouled again and split a pair at the line. Needing a three to tie, Alabama’s final attempt was a desperation heave by Collins that was blocked by Ware as time expired, sealing the Aggies’ victory.
The most critical phase of the game was the final 90 seconds, where Texas A&M’s defense and composure at the free-throw line proved decisive. After Collins’ offensive violation stalled Alabama’s momentum, the Aggies executed under pressure. Pryor’s clutch jumper and her 3-of-4 shooting from the line in the last six seconds provided just enough cushion to withstand Alabama’s final attempts, while Ware’s game-sealing block epitomized the defensive effort required to secure the upset.
Pryor finished with a game-high 20 points, adding seven assists and three steals in 35 minutes, directing the Aggie offense against Alabama’s pressure. Janneh, a 6-foot-1 forward from London, contributed 12 points and nine rebounds, while Ware added 13 points, two blocks, and the decisive final swat.
Alabama was led by Timmons with 19 points and Scott with 18. Essence Cody added 13 points for the Crimson Tide, but the team was plagued by 18 turnovers, which Texas A&M converted into 19 points.
The Aggies improved to 9-10 overall and 2-5 in the SEC, securing a signature conference win. Alabama, which had won four of its last five, fell to 20-5 and 5-3 in league play. The loss marked Alabama’s second in three road games against SEC opponents this season.
A crowd of 2,498 at Reed Arena witnessed the upset, which saw Texas A&M outperform pregame projections that heavily favored Alabama. The Aggies shot effectively inside the arc and capitalized on their free-throw opportunities down the stretch, while Alabama’s normally potent offense was held under 70 points for just the fifth time this season.
Texas A&M travels to face Kentucky on Thursday. Alabama returns home to host Oklahoma next Sunday.
