Alabama A&M Edges Southern in Defensive SWAC Battle
BATON ROUGE, La. (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive pressure and offensive struggles, Kaila Walker’s clutch performance lifted Alabama A&M to a narrow 56-54 victory over Southern in a Southwestern Athletic Conference women’s basketball showdown Saturday at Clark Activity Center.
The contest, played before a crowd of 3,125, was a grind from the opening tip. Both teams struggled to find any offensive rhythm, combining for 42 turnovers and shooting under 40% from the field. The game featured 12 ties and 10 lead changes, with neither team able to build a lead larger than five points.
The most critical sequence unfolded in the final minute. With the score knotted at 54 and Southern in possession following a missed three-pointer by Alabama A&M’s Vanessa Wimberly, the Lady Jaguars’ Demonnie Lagway committed a costly turnover with 11 seconds remaining. The Bulldogs’ Maori Davenport was fouled on the ensuing inbounds play, sending her to the line for two shots with just one second on the clock.
Davenport, a 6-foot-5 sophomore from Troy, Alabama, calmly sank both free throws to put Alabama A&M ahead. Southern’s last-ditch full-court pass attempt was intercepted, sealing the dramatic road win for the Bulldogs.
Walker, a 5-foot-5 guard from Alexander, Arkansas, was the offensive catalyst for Alabama A&M. She finished with a game-high 15 points, including three three-pointers, and added four assists and two steals in 29 minutes. Her back-to-back three-pointers in the final two minutes of the second quarter provided a crucial spark, and her steady ball-handling was vital against Southern’s relentless defensive pressure.
The Bulldogs (13-9, 8-1 SWAC) also got significant contributions from their interior players. Jaida Belton, a 6-foot-4 freshman from Baltimore, Maryland, posted a near double-double with nine points and nine rebounds, along with two blocks. Coriah Beck of Memphis, Tennessee, added 11 points, six rebounds, and a key block, while Davenport’s final free throws capped her eight-point, four-rebound effort.
Southern (11-11, 6-3) was led by Olivia Delancy, who scored 10 points. Jestiny Dixon also chipped in 10 points, and Demya Porter anchored the defense with eight rebounds and three blocks. The Lady Jaguars’ offense, however, sputtered down the stretch, scoring only 11 points in the fourth quarter.
Statistically, the game was a mirror image. Both teams made 19 field goals. Southern held a slight edge from three-point range, hitting 7 of 18 compared to Alabama A&M’s 5 of 17, and were more efficient from the free throw line, making 9 of 14. The Bulldogs countered by attempting more free throws, making 13 of 22, and by dominating the offensive glass with 12 rebounds leading to second-chance opportunities.
The defensive intensity was reflected in the steals column, with Alabama A&M recording 14 and Southern 10. The teams also finished with an identical 21 turnovers apiece, with points off turnovers nearly even at 21 for the Bulldogs and 23 for the Lady Jaguars.
The win extends Alabama A&M’s winning streak to four games and solidifies their position atop the SWAC standings. The Bulldogs have now won eight of their last nine conference games. Southern, which entered the game with a 72.3% probability to win according to Interstat’s ELO system, saw its two-game home winning streak snapped.
Alabama A&M will host Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Thursday. Southern travels to face Texas Southern on the same night. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in the regular-season finale on March 5 in Huntsville, Alabama.
