Mercer Pulls Away Late to Defeat Western Carolina
MACON, Ga. (Interstat) — The Mercer Bears used a dominant fourth-quarter surge to pull away from the Western Carolina Catamounts for a 61-51 victory in a Southern Conference women’s basketball game Saturday at Hawkins Arena.
In a contest defined by defensive pressure and offensive struggles, Mercer outscored Western Carolina 21-13 in the final period to secure the win in front of 425 fans. The game was a rematch of a Jan. 8 meeting, which Mercer also won, 84-75.
The most critical phase of the game unfolded in the fourth quarter. Leading by just three points entering the final period, Mercer clamped down defensively and found a more consistent offensive rhythm. The Bears opened the quarter with a 7-2 run, capped by a Micah O’Dell 3-pointer assisted by Talia Harris, to extend their lead to 47-42 with 8:38 remaining. Western Carolina, which had stayed within striking distance for three quarters, could not mount a response as its shooting woes continued.
Mercer’s defense, which forced 17 turnovers and registered seven steals, consistently disrupted Western Carolina’s sets in the closing minutes. The Bears also capitalized at the free-throw line, making all 10 of their attempts for the game, including six in the fourth quarter to seal the outcome. A key sequence saw Ariana Bennett convert a layup and a free throw with 2:32 left to push Mercer’s lead to nine, effectively putting the game out of reach.
The contest began as a low-scoring, grinding affair. Western Carolina held a 13-10 lead after the first quarter, but Mercer responded with a 14-point second quarter to take a 24-25 edge into halftime. The Catamounts stayed close through the third, trailing just 40-37, thanks in part to their perimeter shooting, where they finished 7 of 16. However, their overall field goal percentage of 30.4% proved unsustainable against Mercer’s more efficient 45.1% shooting from the floor.
Ariana Bennett led Mercer with 14 points, while Nahawa Diarra and Micah O’Dell each added 12. Diarra, a guard from Barcelona, Spain, also contributed four rebounds and four assists. O’Dell, from St. Louis, Missouri, added five rebounds. For Western Carolina, Christina Bowers of Liberty, North Carolina, posted 12 points and nine rebounds. Ally Hollifield of Shelby, North Carolina, also scored 12 points and dished out a game-high seven assists in a full 40 minutes of action.
The game featured 17 turnovers by each team, but Mercer held significant advantages in points in the paint, 22-12, and points off turnovers, 11-7. Western Carolina’s offensive rating of 77.3 on 66 possessions underscored its struggles to generate clean looks against the Bears’ defense.
With the loss, Western Carolina falls to 3-20 overall. The Catamounts have lost eight consecutive games since their last victory on Jan. 8. Mercer improves to 14-9 and solidifies its position in the conference standings. Interstat’s ELO system had projected Mercer with a 93.20 percent probability to win.
Western Carolina next hosts Furman on Thursday. Mercer travels to face East Tennessee State on Tuesday.
