California Baptist at Tarleton State
STEPHENVILLE, Texas (Interstat) — A Western Athletic Conference women’s basketball rematch tips off Thursday when the California Baptist Lancers visit the Tarleton State Texans at Wisdom Gym.
The Lancers (14-8, 7-2 WAC), who sit near the top of the conference standings, enter on a three-game winning streak. They are coming off a dominant 83-55 victory over Texas-Arlington on Jan. 31. Guard Filipa Barros fueled that win with a career-high 32 points and eight rebounds. Barros has been a dynamic force for California Baptist, showcasing versatile playmaking with a 10-assist performance in a win at Utah Valley on Jan. 24.
Tarleton State (11-10, 5-5) looks to rebound from a narrow 65-68 road loss to Abilene Christian on Tuesday. The Texans have been strong at home in conference play, winning three of their last four in Stephenville. Forward Caroline Lyles is coming off an 11-point effort in the loss to Abilene Christian and posted 14 points and nine rebounds in a win at Utah Tech on Jan. 31.
California Baptist won the first meeting this season, 80-68, at home on Jan. 3. The Lancers have won four of their last five games overall, with their only loss in that stretch coming to Abilene Christian.
The matchup features contrasting styles. California Baptist boasts one of the WAC’s more potent offenses, averaging over 75 points per game in conference play. Tarleton State relies on a stout defense, having held opponents under 50 points in two of its last four home games.
A key for Tarleton State will be containing Barros and limiting second-chance opportunities against a tall California Baptist frontcourt. The Texans will need efficient scoring from Lyles and guard Elodie Lutbert, who scored 16 points in the recent loss.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST Thursday. The game is part of a tight WAC schedule as both teams jockey for seeding ahead of the conference tournament in March.
