Alabama A&M Holds Off Bethune-Cookman in Defensive Struggle
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (Interstat) — In a game defined more by grit than grace, the Alabama A&M women’s basketball team survived a chaotic and offensively challenged Southwestern Athletic Conference contest to edge Bethune-Cookman 49-44 on Thursday night at T.M. Elmore Gymnasium.
The Bulldogs, despite committing 25 turnovers and shooting just 19 of 31 from the free-throw line, used a dominant second-quarter surge and a late defensive stand to secure the victory in front of 987 fans. The win improved Alabama A&M to 11-9 overall, while Bethune-Cookman’s losing streak extended to four games, dropping the Wildcats to 3-18.
The most important stretch of the game arrived in the second quarter, where Alabama A&M transformed a sluggish start into a commanding lead they would never fully relinquish. Bethune-Cookman had controlled the opening period, leveraging active defense to build a 13-7 lead. The Wildcats forced eight first-quarter turnovers, with guards Jordan Brooks and Kailyn Peters applying consistent pressure.
The momentum shifted decisively over the next ten minutes. Alabama A&M’s defense stiffened, holding Bethune-Cookman to a mere six points in the second quarter on 2-of-13 shooting. Simultaneously, the Bulldogs’ offense found a rhythm behind center Maori Davenport. The 6-foot-5 sophomore from Troy, Alabama, scored six of her game-high 19 points during the frame, exploiting the interior as the Wildcats struggled to score.
Alabama A&M outscored Bethune-Cookman 19-6 in the quarter, turning a six-point deficit into a 26-19 halftime advantage. The Bulldogs shot 50% from the field in the period while Bethune-Cookman’s offensive rating plummeted, a product of rushed shots and the Bulldogs’ increasing physical presence.
The game never evolved into an aesthetic showcase. Both teams combined to shoot under 35% from the field. Bethune-Cookman finished 11 of 46, a stark 23.9%, but stayed afloat by hitting 6 of 14 three-pointers and 16 of 20 free throws. Alabama A&M was more efficient from the floor at 14 of 33 but was plagued by its own mistakes, including the 25 giveaways.
Bethune-Cookman, demonstrating the resilience that has characterized several of their close conference losses, refused to fold. Trailing 33-24 midway through the third quarter, the Wildcats mounted a 9-2 run, capped by a Madison Holden layup, to claw within 35-33. The Bulldogs responded, taking a 40-35 lead into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter was a tense, fragmented affair of fouls, turnovers, and missed opportunities. Bethune-Cookman’s Daimoni Dorsey, who finished with 12 points, hit two free throws with 2:54 remaining to tie the game at 44-44, completing a wild sequence that saw four lead changes in the period.
Alabama A&M’s final answer came from an unlikely source. With the shot clock winding down and just 22 seconds left on the game clock, guard Coriah Beck connected on a critical three-pointer from the wing off an assist from Vanessa Wimberly, giving the Bulldogs a 47-44 lead. It was just the second three-pointer of the game for Alabama A&M.
Bethune-Cookman had two chances to tie in the final 20 seconds. A rushed three-pointer by Shomari Phillips missed, and after a free throw by Wimberly extended the lead to four, the Wildcats turned the ball over on their final inbound play, sealing their fate.
Beyond Davenport’s 19-point, 29-minute effort for Alabama A&M, Kaila Walker added eight points and three assists. For Bethune-Cookman, Dorsey’s 12 points led the way, while Janessa Kelley provided a spark off the bench with nine points, all from beyond the arc. Jordan Brooks contributed four points and three assists for the Wildcats.
The game was a defensive struggle, with the teams combining for 26 steals. Bethune-Cookman’s 14 steals and 11 offensive rebounds kept them in contention despite their shooting woes, but they ultimately could not overcome 20 turnovers of their own and Alabama A&M’s pivotal second-quarter run.
Alabama A&M will host Florida A&M on Saturday, looking to build on the win. Bethune-Cookman continues its road trip at Alabama State on Saturday, still in search of its first SWAC victory of the season.
