Milwaukee at Cleveland State
Preview: Milwaukee Panthers at Cleveland State Vikings
CLEVELAND (Interstat) — The Cleveland State Vikings look to avenge an early-January loss and solidify their standing near the top of the Horizon League when they host the Milwaukee Panthers on Wednesday night at Wolstein Center.
The Vikings (15-7 overall) enter the matchup with a clear record advantage over the Panthers (7-15), but Milwaukee secured a 66-58 home victory when the teams met on Jan. 4. That result adds a layer of urgency for a Cleveland State team seeking consistency after a 38-61 road loss to Youngstown State on Sunday, a game in which the Vikings managed a season-low in points.
Milwaukee arrives having dropped four of its last five, including an 82-71 defeat to Oakland on Saturday. The Panthers’ offense has struggled for reliability, but they have shown the capability to win in league play, as evidenced by their earlier win over Cleveland State and a victory over Detroit on Jan. 22.
A key rematch within the game will feature Milwaukee’s Grace Lomen against Cleveland State’s Izabella Zingaro. Lomen, a forward, torched the Vikings for 16 points and five rebounds in the Jan. 4 win and is coming off a 27-point performance against Oakland. Her scoring punch is vital for the Panthers.
Zingaro, a dominant post player for the Vikings, recorded 23 points and six rebounds in the first meeting but it wasn’t enough. She has been a consistent force, scoring 22 points against Fort Wayne on Jan. 21 and 20 points against Detroit on Jan. 14. Containing her will be a primary focus for Milwaukee’s interior defense.
The Vikings have been strong at home this season, while Milwaukee has found wins harder to come by on the road. Cleveland State will aim to leverage its defensive pressure to create turnovers and easy baskets, areas that faltered in their recent loss.
Wednesday’s contest is a critical Horizon League fixture for both sides. For Cleveland State, it’s a chance to correct a recent stumble and defend home court. For Milwaukee, it’s an opportunity to sweep the season series and build momentum from one of their best performances this season.
Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. EST at the Wolstein Center.
