Titans Force 32 Turnovers, Cruise Past 49ers in Big West Matchup

LONG BEACH, Calif. (Interstat) — Kya Pearson scored 23 points and Cal State Fullerton forced 32 turnovers in an 84-66 victory over Long Beach State on Thursday night in a Big West Conference women’s basketball game at the Walter Pyramid.

The Titans, who evened their season record at 10-9, used a dominant second quarter to seize control. After trailing 24-17 through one period, Fullerton outscored the 49ers 31-14 in the second to take a 48-38 halftime lead. The surge was fueled by relentless defensive pressure, which generated 15 of Long Beach State’s turnovers before the break.

Pearson, a 5-foot-9 guard from Oakland, California, added five assists and was instrumental in the Titans’ transition attack. Cristina Jones, a Long Beach native, contributed 15 points, while 6-foot-3 forward Talia Maxwell added 19 points and a block for Fullerton.

The most important stretch of the game came early in the second quarter. With Fullerton trailing 24-19, the Titans unleashed a 17-2 run over a five-minute span. The sequence was defined by consecutive steals leading to easy baskets, including a layup by Jones and a jump shot by Maddy Tauro. Pearson capped the run with a layup off a steal she created herself, pushing the Titans ahead 36-26. Long Beach State never recovered, unable to handle Fullerton’s defensive intensity or mount a sustained offensive response.

Long Beach State, which fell to 2-16, was led by Rosie Akot’s 16 points and four blocks. JaQuoia Jones-Brown scored 13 points and Morgan Mack added 12, but the 49ers’ season-long struggles were compounded by ball-handling issues. Their 32 turnovers led directly to 25 points for the Titans.

Cal State Fullerton shot 47.8 percent from the field but just 18.8 percent from three-point range. Their offense was efficient, however, posting an offensive rating of 101.8 points per 100 possessions, aided by 25 assists on 33 made field goals. Long Beach State shot 50 percent from the floor and 40 percent from deep but managed only six assists against the high turnover count.

The Titans’ defense was the story, recording 25 steals. Jones and Pearson each had four steals, while Jana Falsdottir contributed four assists and four steals off the bench.

The game drew an announced crowd of 618. Cal State Fullerton returns home to face Cal Poly on Saturday. Long Beach State travels to face UC Santa Barbara on Saturday.
