Preview: Texas A&M-Commerce at Lamar Women’s Basketball
BEAUMONT, Texas (Interstat) — The Lamar Lady Cardinals will look to complete a regular-season sweep and extend their winning streak when they host the Texas A&M-Commerce Lions in a Southland Conference women’s basketball game Thursday night at the Montagne Center.
Lamar (10-6, 4-1 SLC) enters on a four-game winning streak, including a decisive 64-48 victory over these same Lions just over three weeks ago in Commerce on Dec. 31. The Lady Cardinals are coming off a 72-64 road win at Nicholls State on Saturday, led by 21 points from guard Kamryn Wilson.
Wilson has been a consistent force for Lamar, averaging 16.5 points over her last four contests. In the first meeting against Commerce, she posted 10 points, eight rebounds and three assists.
Texas A&M-Commerce (7-9, 2-3) seeks to snap a three-game skid and avenge its prior loss to Lamar. The Lions are coming off a 65-52 defeat at Houston Christian, their third consecutive loss following a 2-0 start to conference play.
The Lions will lean heavily on forward Tiani Ellison, who has been a standout despite the team’s recent struggles. Ellison is averaging 20.1 points over her last seven games, including a 28-point effort against Incarnate Word and a 23-point, 10-rebound performance in a win over New Orleans. She was held to 16 points on 6-of-17 shooting in the first matchup with Lamar.
Commerce’s challenge will be finding consistent scoring beyond Ellison and improving an offense that managed only 48 points in the December meeting. Lamar’s defense has held opponents to an average of 58.2 points during its current win streak.
The Lady Cardinals have protected their home court well this season, boasting a 6-1 record in Beaumont. A win would solidify their position near the top of the conference standings, while the Lions aim to climb back to .500 in league play.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST Thursday.
