Marshall Holds Off Southern Mississippi Rally for Conference USA Road Win

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (Interstat) — Marshall’s women’s basketball team built a commanding early lead and weathered a frantic fourth-quarter rally from Southern Mississippi to secure a 61-52 road victory in a Conference USA matchup Thursday night at Reed Green Coliseum.

The Thundering Herd improved to 16-5 overall and in conference play, while the Lady Eagles fell to 11-8.

The game’s defining stretch came at the outset, as Marshall’s defensive pressure completely stifled the Southern Mississippi offense. The Thundering Herd opened the game on a 17-1 run, holding the Lady Eagles without a field goal for the first seven minutes and 33 seconds. Southern Mississippi missed its first nine shot attempts and committed five turnovers during that decisive span, digging a hole from which it could never fully escape.

Marshall guard Timaya Lewis-Eutsey of Trenton, New Jersey, broke the ice with a layup at the 8:33 mark of the first quarter. The Herd’s defense, which finished with 13 steals and six blocks, consistently generated offense, converting 24 points off 20 Southern Mississippi turnovers.

The Lady Eagles, led by guard Meloney Thames of Philadelphia, Mississippi, who scored a game-high 17 points, finally found some rhythm late. Trailing by 20 points entering the fourth quarter, Southern Mississippi mounted a 21-13 final-period charge. A driving layup by Thames with 1:08 remaining cut Marshall’s lead to 52-50, marking the first time the deficit was within a single possession since the opening minutes.

Marshall, however, responded at the free-throw line. After Thames’ basket, Lewis-Eutsey was fouled and made one of two free throws. Following a defensive stop, Peyton Ilderton of Logan, West Virginia, was fouled and sank both free throws with 25 seconds left to push the lead back to five points. Southern Mississippi could not score again, and Ilderton added two more free throws in the final seconds to seal the win.

Ilderton finished with 11 points, while Lewis-Eutsey added 12 points and three assists. Forward Meredith Maier of Fairmont, West Virginia, provided a critical all-around performance for Marshall with 14 points, including three 3-pointers, and a key block in the final minute.

For Southern Mississippi, Thames’ 17 points were supplemented by 13 points from Jakayla Johnson of Clinton, Mississippi, and 12 points from Hayleigh Breland of Wiggins, Mississippi. The Lady Eagles won the rebounding battle 40-35, including 15 offensive boards, but were undone by their cold start and ball security issues.

Marshall’s offensive execution was efficient when it mattered, assisted by 13 steals that fueled their transition game. The Herd shot 38% from the field and 36% from 3-point range, while Southern Mississippi finished at 35% overall and 26% from beyond the arc. Both teams struggled at the free-throw line, with Marshall making 10 of 22 attempts and Southern Mississippi hitting 8 of 14.

The announced attendance was 1,343.

Marshall next plays at Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday. Southern Mississippi returns to action at home against Coastal Carolina, also on Saturday.
