McNeese State Cowgirls Dominate Southeastern Louisiana Lions in Southland Conference Mismatch

HAMMOND, La. (Interstat) — The McNeese State Cowgirls delivered a defensive masterclass, holding the Southeastern Louisiana Lions to the lowest point total by a Division I opponent in program history in a commanding 72-30 victory in a Southland Conference women’s basketball game Thursday night at the University Center.

From the opening tip, the outcome was never in doubt. McNeese State, now 15-4 overall and riding a five-game winning streak, raced to a 19-7 lead after the first quarter and then delivered a knockout blow in the second. The Cowgirls outscored the Lions 28-6 in that period, fueled by a suffocating defense that forced 25 total turnovers and converted them into 28 points.

The most decisive stretch of the game began late in the first quarter and extended deep into the second. Leading 13-7, McNeese State closed the opening frame on a 6-0 run, capped by an Allasia Washington pull-up jumper. The onslaught continued unabated after the break. The Cowgirls opened the second quarter with a 15-0 run, a stretch that saw Southeastern Louisiana commit six turnovers and miss its first six shots from the field. By the time the Lions’ Natalie Huff made a free throw with 3:09 left in the half, McNeese State had built a 42-8 advantage, effectively ending the contest before halftime.

Dakota Howard, a 5-foot-11 sophomore from Shreveport, Louisiana, led all scorers with 19 points in just 19 minutes, showcasing efficient offense inside. She was supported by a balanced attack as Kaili Chamberlin and Tyreona Sibley each added 9 points. The Cowgirls’ ball movement, resulting in nine assists, starkly contrasted the Lions’ struggles, as Southeastern Louisiana managed only three assists against its 25 giveaways.

Defensively, McNeese State was relentless. The Lions (2-15) shot a dismal 23.4% from the field, making just 11 of 47 attempts, and connected on only 4 of 22 from three-point range. Their offensive rating of 44.2 points per 100 possessions underscored a night of profound offensive futility. Aliyah Collins led Southeastern Louisiana with 7 points and 4 assists, while Mia Ramos also scored 7 points.

The victory was McNeese State’s second this season over the Lions, having won 77-55 in Lake Charles on Jan. 10. It also continued a dominant defensive trend for the Cowgirls, who have now held four of their last five opponents under 55 points.

Southeastern Louisiana’s season of struggle continued, as the Lions lost their fourth consecutive game and ninth in their last ten outings. The 30-point output marked a season low and was the fewest points McNeese State has allowed to a Division I foe since joining the classification.

The announced attendance was 788.

McNeese State looks to continue its surge when it hosts New Orleans on Saturday. Southeastern Louisiana will try to regroup at home against Nicholls State, also on Saturday.
