California Baptist at Utah Tech
ST. GEORGE, Utah (Interstat) — A Western Athletic Conference women’s basketball rematch awaits Thursday when the California Baptist Lancers visit the Utah Tech Trailblazers at Burns Arena.
The Lancers (11-8, 4-2 WAC) aim to complete a regular-season sweep after defeating the Trailblazers (6-10, 1-5) 75-67 in St. George just two weeks ago on Jan. 8. California Baptist has won four of its last six games, though it is coming off a 70-58 home loss to Abilene Christian last Thursday. Utah Tech has dropped five of its last six, including a 64-60 defeat at Tarleton State on Saturday.
California Baptist is led by guard Lauren Olsen, who has been a consistent offensive force. She scored 16 points in the previous win over Utah Tech and is averaging 19.2 points per game over her last six contests, including a 23-point performance in a win over Texas-Arlington on Jan. 1. Her play will be central to the Lancers’ efforts to bounce back from their recent loss.
Utah Tech will look to guard Brie Crittendon to help orchestrate a different outcome. Crittendon had 7 points and 3 assists in the first meeting and is coming off a 10-point, 4-assist effort against Tarleton State. The Trailblazers will need improved scoring efficiency after being held under 68 points in four of their five conference losses.
The matchup features a contrast in recent trajectories. California Baptist’s 4-2 conference start has kept it in the upper tier of the WAC standings, while Utah Tech seeks to climb out of the lower half with a pivotal home victory. The Trailblazers’ defense, which allowed 75 points to CBU earlier this month, will be tested again by Olsen and a Lancer offense averaging 74.2 points per game in WAC play.
Following this game, California Baptist visits Utah Valley on Saturday. Utah Tech travels to face Southern Utah on the same day. The teams will meet again in Riverside, California, on Feb. 14.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. MST at Burns Arena.
