Kenembeni Leads Colonels Past Privateers in Southland Matchup
THIBODAUX, La. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a decisive second quarter and a dominant performance from Marie Kenembeni, the Nicholls State Colonels methodically dispatched the visiting New Orleans Privateers 67-49 in a Southland Conference women’s basketball matchup Thursday night at Stopher Gym.
The Colonels improved to 9-8 overall and secured their second victory over the Privateers in 11 days. New Orleans, struggling through a difficult season, fell to 1-17.
The contest was effectively decided in the second period. After a competitive first quarter that ended with Nicholls State leading 18-16, the Privateers’ offense collapsed. New Orleans managed only eight points in the second quarter on 3-of-15 shooting from the floor and committed six turnovers. Meanwhile, the Colonels, while not spectacular, steadily built their lead with a 17-point frame, taking a 35-24 advantage into halftime.
Nicholls State’s control stemmed from interior superiority and capitalizing on New Orleans’ offensive woes. The Colonels outrebounded the Privateers 53-40 overall and grabbed 14 offensive boards, leading to 15 second-chance points. New Orleans shot just 31.1% for the game and a frigid 14.3% from three-point range. Their 49 points on 80 possessions reflected an offensive rating of 61.5, a mark emblematic of their season-long struggles.
The Colonels’ offense was efficiently paced by Kenembeni, a 6-foot-2 junior from Yaounde, Cameroon. She scored a game-high 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting, adding two blocks and two steals in just 24 minutes. Her presence in the paint was a constant issue for the smaller Privateers, affecting shots and cleaning the glass.
Emani Burks provided strong support for Nicholls State with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, while the guard trio of Anyra Wilson, Sh’Diamond McKnight and Tanita Swift combined for 13 assists, facilitating the offense against New Orleans’ pressure.
For the Privateers, Brialle Washington of Rayne, Louisiana, led the way with 13 points. Shanihya Brown of Chicago dished out a game-high six assists but was hampered by shooting troubles, finishing with five points on 2-of-12 from the field. Reserve guard Sharon Smith provided a brief spark off the bench, scoring all eight of her points in the first half, but the Privateers could not sustain any offensive rhythm.
New Orleans showed brief resistance early. After falling behind 6-2, they used a 7-0 run, capped by a Mariah Hart three-pointer, to take a 9-6 lead. The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the quarter, with Smith’s late layup keeping the deficit at two.
The second-quarter drought, however, put the Privateers in a hole from which they could not recover. They never got closer than nine points in the second half, as Nicholls State maintained a double-digit lead throughout the final 20 minutes. The Colonels extended their lead to as many as 20 points in the fourth quarter before settling for the 18-point victory.
The win keeps Nicholls State in the middle of the Southland Conference pack as they look ahead to a road game at Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday. New Orleans, still searching for its second win of the season, travels to face McNeese State on Saturday.
