Alcorn State Holds Off Bethune-Cookman for SWAC Road Win

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Interstat) — In a game defined more by grit than grace, the Alcorn State Lady Braves ground out a 56-51 victory over the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats in a Southwestern Athletic Conference women’s basketball contest Thursday night at Moore Gymnasium.

The game was a defensive struggle from the outset, with both teams combining for more turnovers (35) than made field goals (39). Alcorn State’s persistent defensive pressure proved to be the decisive factor, forcing Bethune-Cookman into 24 turnovers, which the Lady Braves converted into 20 points off those miscues. The Wildcats, by contrast, managed only 7 points off Alcorn State’s 11 turnovers.

Alcorn State established control with a stifling first-quarter defensive effort, holding Bethune-Cookman to just six points and building a 13-6 lead. The Lady Braves maintained that cushion through methodical, if not explosive, offensive execution, scoring exactly 13 points in each of the first three quarters before closing with 17 in the fourth.

Bethune-Cookman, which fell to 3-16 overall, never led and spent the entire game fighting uphill. The Wildcats chipped away in the second and third quarters, trailing 26-19 at halftime and 39-33 heading into the final period. A late push in the fourth quarter, fueled by Daimoni Dorsey and Tyler Butler, brought Bethune-Cookman within a single possession on multiple occasions, but critical turnovers and missed opportunities down the stretch prevented a complete comeback.

The most important sequence of the game occurred in the final minute with Alcorn State clinging to a 52-49 lead. After Bethune-Cookman’ Janessa Kelley hit a 3-pointer with 17 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to three, Alcorn State’s Ja’Sharreah Hunt was fouled. The guard from Roxie, Mississippi, calmly sank both free throws with 13 seconds left to push the lead back to five. On the ensuing possession, Butler scored a quick layup for Bethune-Cookman with five seconds left, but the Wildcats were forced to foul again. Hunt returned to the line and iced the game with two more free throws, securing the road victory for the Lady Braves.

Statistically, the game was an exercise in inefficiency. Alcorn State shot just 32.2% from the field (19 of 59) and a dismal 23.1% from 3-point range (6 of 26). They also struggled at the free-throw line, making only 12 of 23 attempts. Bethune-Cookman was slightly better from the floor at 40.8% (20 of 49) but attempted only nine 3-pointers, making two. The Wildcats made 9 of 14 free throws.

Where Alcorn State excelled was in creating extra possessions and facilitating its offense. The Lady Braves dished out nine assists to Bethune-Cookman’s four and recorded nine steals to the Wildcats’ four. Nakia Cheatham, a 6-foot forward from Clarksdale, Mississippi, led Alcorn State with 12 points and added a steal and a block. Kiarra Henderson of Fort Worth, Texas, orchestrated the offense with a game-high seven assists to go with three points and a block.

For Bethune-Cookman, Tyler Butler shouldered the offensive load, finishing with a game-high 13 points and two blocks. Daimoni Dorsey added 11 points. Madison Holden contributed four points and three assists but also committed five of her team’s turnovers.

Alcorn State, which evened its conference record and improved to 7-9 overall, showcased a balanced scoring attack. Behind Cheatham, Lauren Nelson of El Dorado, Arkansas, and Leyah Houston of Gainesville, Florida, each added nine points. Houston scored all her points in a crucial third-quarter burst. Ja’Sharreah Hunt finished with nine points, with seven coming from the free-throw line in the final quarter.

The win gives Alcorn State its third victory in its last four SWAC games. Bethune-Cookman’s search for its first conference win continues, having now lost six straight in SWAC play.

Alcorn State will travel to face Florida A&M on Saturday. Bethune-Cookman will host Jackson State, also on Saturday.
