Downing Leads East Tennessee State Past Western Carolina

CULLOWHEE, N.C. (Interstat) — A dominant third-quarter defensive performance propelled the East Tennessee State Lady Buccaneers to a 62-50 victory over the Western Carolina Catamounts in a Southern Conference women’s basketball game Thursday night at the Ramsey Center.

In a contest defined by offensive struggles for both sides, East Tennessee State broke open a tight game by holding Western Carolina to just eight points in the decisive third period. The Lady Buccaneers turned a 32-32 halftime deadlock into a 48-40 lead entering the final quarter, a margin they would not relinquish before an announced crowd of 537.

The game’s pivotal stretch began immediately after the break. Meghan Downing of East Tennessee State opened the third quarter with a steal and a layup, setting the tone for a period where the Lady Buccaneers’ defense smothered the Catamounts. Western Carolina committed five turnovers in the quarter and shot miserably from the field, allowing East Tennessee State to methodically build its lead. Downing, a 6-foot-2 forward from New Madison, Ohio, was instrumental throughout, finishing with a game-high 17 points to go with two assists and two blocks in 29 minutes.

Western Carolina had shown resilience in the first half, erasing an early deficit to take a brief lead. After falling behind 16-9 in the first quarter, the Catamounts used an 18-point second quarter to draw even at halftime. Ary Dizon of Western Carolina, a 6-foot-2 forward from Tampa, Florida, was active early, scoring 11 points, but was hampered by turnovers.

East Tennessee State’s backcourt provided crucial support for Downing. Carmen Richardson, a 5-foot-7 guard from Orlando, Florida, orchestrated the offense with three assists while adding seven points. Daniela López, a 5-foot-10 guard from Barcelona, Spain, chipped in 10 points. Anala Nelson added nine points for the Lady Buccaneers.

For Western Carolina, Dizon and Taj Hunter, a 5-foot-8 guard from Atlanta, Georgia, each scored 11 points. Hunter also contributed three assists. Christina Bowers added seven points for the Catamounts, who struggled to find any consistent offensive rhythm after halftime.

The victory improved East Tennessee State’s season record to 8-11 overall. The loss dropped Western Carolina to 3-16.

The most important part of the game was undoubtedly the opening minutes of the third quarter. With the score tied, East Tennessee State emerged from the locker room with intensified defensive pressure. They forced consecutive turnovers from Western Carolina’s primary post player, Ary Dizon, converting them into immediate points. This sequence, highlighted by Meghan Downing’s steal and score on the first possession, sparked a 10-2 run that gave the Lady Buccaneers a lead they would never surrender. Western Carolina’s offense, which had found a groove in the second quarter, completely stalled against ETSU’s aggressive defense, managing only three field goals in the entire 10-minute period. This defensive stand provided the necessary cushion for East Tennessee State to control the game’s tempo and secure the road conference win.

East Tennessee State will look to build momentum when it travels to face UNC Greensboro on Saturday. Western Carolina will remain at home to host Chattanooga, also on Saturday.
