Skyhawks Use Strong Second Quarter to Top Redhawks in OVC Matchup

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (Interstat) — A dominant second-quarter defensive performance propelled the Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks to a 67-56 victory over the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks in an Ohio Valley Conference women’s basketball game Tuesday night at the Show Me Center.

The Skyhawks, who improved to 9-8 overall, held the Redhawks to just seven points in the second period, turning a one-point deficit after the first quarter into a 33-20 halftime lead they would never relinquish. Southeast Missouri State fell to 6-12.

Tennessee-Martin’s defense was the story, forcing 16 Redhawk turnovers and converting them into 18 points. The Skyhawks also recorded nine steals, led by the backcourt pressure of Brittani Wells, who had five assists to go with four steals. Offensively, the Skyhawks were efficient from the free-throw line, making 22 of 29 attempts, a decisive advantage over the Redhawks’ 12-of-18 shooting from the stripe.

Norah Clark led all scorers with 16 points for Tennessee-Martin, adding a block and a steal in 40 minutes of action. Sidni Middleton and Zakheria Thompson each added 12 points, while Kenley McCarn also finished with 12 points and a team-high three steals. Wells, despite scoring only four points, orchestrated the offense with her five assists.

Southeast Missouri State was led by Carmen Taylor’s 14 points. Madison Ayers and Kearra Jones each contributed 12 points, while Ainaya Williams came off the bench to score 11. The Redhawks struggled to find consistent offense, shooting just 40.8% from the field and 25% from three-point range.

The game began as a back-and-forth affair, with Southeast Missouri State holding a narrow 13-12 lead after the first quarter. The momentum shifted decisively in the second period. Tennessee-Martin opened the quarter with an 11-2 run, fueled by defensive stops and transition opportunities. The Skyhawks’ half-court defense stifled the Redhawks, holding them without a field goal for over six minutes. By the time the halftime buzzer sounded, the Skyhawks had outscored the Redhawks 21-7 in the quarter, with Clark scoring eight of her points during the surge.

The most critical sequence of the game, however, came early in the fourth quarter when Southeast Missouri State mounted its most serious challenge. After trailing by as many as 16 points, the Redhawks used a 10-2 run spanning the end of the third and start of the fourth quarters to cut the deficit to 43-41 with 8:52 remaining, energizing the crowd of 685.

Tennessee-Martin responded with immediate and decisive force. On the ensuing possession, Grace Billington sank a crucial three-pointer off an assist from Sidni Middleton. Following a steal by Wells, Middleton hit a jump shot to push the lead back to seven. After a Redhawks timeout, the Skyhawks forced another turnover, leading to a layup by Wells. In a span of just 76 seconds, Tennessee-Martin engineered a 7-0 run to rebuild a 50-41 advantage, effectively extinguishing the Redhawks’ comeback hopes. Southeast Missouri State would get no closer than seven points the rest of the way.

The Skyhawks sealed the game at the free-throw line, making 11 of 14 attempts in the final quarter. Their ability to withstand the Redhawks’ push and answer with a knockout flurry proved to be the defining passage of the contest.

Tennessee-Martin finished the game shooting 45.7% from the field while holding Southeast Missouri State to an offensive rating of 82.9 points per 100 possessions. The Skyhawks also won the battle on the glass, out-rebounding the Redhawks 32-28.

The victory gives Tennessee-Martin its third win in its last four conference games. Southeast Missouri State has now lost two of its last three.

Tennessee-Martin will host Arkansas-Little Rock on Saturday. Southeast Missouri State is scheduled to host Arkansas-Little Rock on Thursday.
