Southern Mississippi at Texas State

SAN MARCOS, Texas (Interstat) — The Southern Mississippi Lady Eagles look to rebound from a lopsided loss when they visit the Texas State Bobcats in a non-conference women’s basketball matchup Wednesday afternoon at Strahan Coliseum.

Southern Mississippi (10-6) enters having dropped two of its last three, including an 82-59 defeat at Appalachian State on Saturday. The Lady Eagles’ offense runs through guard Jakayla Johnson, who has been on a scoring tear. She poured in 23 points in the loss to the Mountaineers, following a 30-point, 4-rebound, 4-assist performance in a 98-95 win over Troy on Jan. 3. Over her last five games, Johnson is averaging 23.8 points.

Texas State (7-8) snapped a two-game skid with a gritty 55-43 road win at Louisiana-Lafayette last Saturday. The Bobcats are led by forward Kyra Anderson, who dominated in that victory with a 20-point, 11-rebound double-double along with two blocked shots. Anderson’s production has been variable, however, as she was held to just two points in a loss to Troy three days earlier.

The game pits Southern Mississippi’s potent offense, which has scored 76 or more points in four of its last six, against a Texas State team that has found success with defense, holding its last two opponents under 70 points. The Lady Eagles will need more support for Johnson; Whitney Hart’s nine rebounds against Appalachian State was a bright spot.

This contest is the first of a home-and-home series between the programs this season. They are scheduled to meet again in Hattiesburg on Feb. 14.

For Texas State, the game begins a three-game homestand. Southern Mississippi continues its road swing at Arkansas State on Saturday.

Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. CST Wednesday.
