Bystry Leads Northern Kentucky Past Milwaukee in Horizon League Matchup

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. (Interstat) — Karina Bystry scored a game-high 20 points and Northern Kentucky used a dominant first quarter to build a lead it would never relinquish, holding off a late Milwaukee rally for a 63-55 victory in a Horizon League women’s basketball game Wednesday night at Regents Hall.

The Norse improved to 9-11 overall, while the Panthers fell to 6-13.

Northern Kentucky seized control from the opening tip, racing out to a 21-11 lead after the first quarter. The Norse shot efficiently early, capitalizing on Milwaukee turnovers and missed shots to build a double-digit cushion. Mya Meredith, who finished with 11 points, hit an early 3-pointer to set the tone, and the Norse defense held Milwaukee to just 3-of-13 shooting in the period.

Milwaukee, showing resilience, chipped away in the second quarter. A 3-pointer from Sophia Rampulla and a layup from Tierney Madigan helped the Panthers narrow the gap, but Northern Kentucky answered every run. Jamaya Thomas provided a spark off the bench with six second-quarter points, helping the Norse maintain a 37-25 advantage at halftime.

The third quarter was a defensive struggle, with both teams combining for only 20 points. Northern Kentucky extended its lead to 48-34 heading into the final frame, largely on the strength of Bystry’s consistent scoring and a defensive effort that limited Milwaukee to nine points in the quarter.

The most important sequence of the game unfolded in the fourth quarter, as Milwaukee mounted a furious comeback attempt. Trailing by 14, the Panthers found an offensive rhythm behind the sharpshooting of reserve guard Rita Gomes. The freshman from Lisbon, Portugal, ignited a 19-7 run by hitting three 3-pointers in a four-minute span. Her final long-range shot, assisted by Madison Fitzgibbon with 2:35 remaining, cut the Norse lead to 55-53 and suddenly placed the outcome in doubt.

Northern Kentucky, however, responded with the poise of a veteran team. On the ensuing possession, Bystry drove hard to the basket for a crucial layup to push the lead back to four. After a Milwaukee miss, the Norse worked the clock and drew fouls, with Abby Wolterman sinking two free throws with 1:39 left to make it a two-possession game. Milwaukee’s offense then went cold under pressure, missing its next three shots.

The Panthers were forced to foul in the final minute, and Northern Kentucky sealed the game at the line. Bystry, a 5-foot-9 guard from Englewood, Tennessee, was instrumental in the closing moments, hitting four consecutive free throws in the final 12 seconds to extinguish any remaining hope for Milwaukee. She played 34 minutes and added three steals to her 20-point effort.

Gomes led Milwaukee with 11 points, all in the second half, while Rampulla added 10. Jorey Buwalda contributed seven points, two assists and a block in 34 minutes for the Panthers.

Northern Kentucky’s defense was the story for much of the night, forcing 18 Milwaukee turnovers and converting them into 19 points. The Norse also held a 38-34 rebounding edge. Mya Meredith complemented Bystry with her 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

The announced attendance was 1,507.

Milwaukee will look to rebound at home against Green Bay on Saturday. Northern Kentucky travels to face Wright State, also on Saturday.
