Alabama A&M Women Dominate Alcorn State in SWAC Matchup

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (Interstat) — The Alabama A&M women’s basketball team delivered a commanding defensive performance, overwhelming Alcorn State from the opening tip and cruising to a 76-34 victory in a Southwestern Athletic Conference game Saturday at T.M. Elmore Gymnasium.

The Bulldogs (7-9, 2-1 SWAC) established immediate and total control, holding the visiting Lady Braves (4-9, 2-1) without a field goal for the game’s first eight minutes and 47 seconds. Alcorn State’s profound offensive struggles were the defining narrative, as they managed just four points in the opening quarter and finished the game shooting a frigid 21.3% from the field.

Alabama A&M’s defense was relentless, generating 12 turnovers and converting them into 20 points. The Bulldogs also dominated the interior, outscoring Alcorn State 30-10 in the paint and outrebounding them decisively. The Lady Braves’ offensive rating of 50.4 points per 100 possessions underscored a afternoon of futility, compounded by 17 total turnovers and a 10-for-20 showing at the free-throw line.

The most important part of the game was the first-quarter onslaught that rendered the remaining three periods a formality. Alabama A&M opened with an 18-4 run, a stretch defined by Alcorn State’s string of missed shots, turnovers, and shot-clock violations. The Lady Braves started 0-for-12 from the field, their first points coming only on a pair of Kiarra Henderson free throws at the 5:18 mark. Their first basket, a Nakia Cheatham jump shot, did not fall until 3:45 remained in the period, by which time the Bulldogs had built a 10-2 lead.

Maori Davenport, Alabama A&M’s 6-foot-5 center from Troy, Alabama, was instrumental in the early lockdown. She recorded a block on Alcorn State’s final shot attempt of the first quarter and altered countless others, finishing with 18 points, two blocks and nine rebounds in just 29 minutes. Her presence anchored a defense that allowed no easy looks.

While Davenport controlled the interior, guard Kaila Walker provided the perimeter punch for the Bulldogs. The sophomore from Alexander, Arkansas, led all scorers with 19 points, including three 3-pointers, and added three steals in 35 minutes of action. Aniya Palmer contributed 12 points and three assists, and Rakiyah Beal filled the stat sheet with six points, four assists, four rebounds, a block and a steal.

Alcorn State, which entered the contest on a two-game SWAC winning streak, found no offensive rhythm. Henderson led the Lady Braves with eight points. The team’s 34-point total was its second-lowest output of the season.

Alabama A&M’s offense operated with efficiency, shooting 53.1% from the floor and 41.2% from beyond the arc. They shared the ball effectively, dishing out 17 assists on 26 made field goals, and capitalized at the line, making 17 of 23 free throws.

The Bulldogs maintained their intensity after halftime, extending a 39-18 lead at the break. They opened the third quarter with a 7-0 spurt, pushing the advantage to 28 points and removing any lingering doubt about the outcome. The lead ballooned to as many as 42 points in the final period.

The victory moves Alabama A&M above .500 in conference play and provides momentum as they prepare for a two-game road swing in Texas next week. Alcorn State will look to regroup at home after a defeat that highlighted significant offensive challenges.

An announced crowd of 1,138 watched the game, which saw Alabama A&M improve to 5-2 at home this season. The Bulldogs’ defensive effort held an opponent under 40 points for the third time this year.
