Idaho at Eastern Washington
CHENEY, Wash. (Interstat) — A key early-season Big Sky Conference women’s basketball matchup tips off Saturday when the Idaho Vandals visit the Eastern Washington Eagles at Reese Court.
Idaho (9-4) enters conference play with momentum, having won its last game decisively, 91-63 over Western Oregon on Dec. 20. The Vandals’ record includes a notable 84-54 road win at Denver earlier in December. Eastern Washington (7-6) also comes off a commanding victory, defeating Bushnell 78-37 on Dec. 29.
The matchup features two of the league’s top guards. Idaho’s Kyra Gardner is playing at an elite level, averaging a near triple-double in her last four games. She recorded a triple-double with 12 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists against Western Oregon, following a 16-point, 12-rebound performance at Denver. For the Eagles, Elyn Bowers provides dynamic scoring and playmaking. She scored 20 points in a road upset of Washington State on Dec. 10 and is coming off a 14-point, 4-assist effort against Bushnell.
The Vandals’ offense has been potent, scoring 80 or more points in five games this season. Alongside Gardner, Ana Pinheiro (19 points vs. Western Oregon) and Sarah Brans provide additional scoring punch. Eastern Washington counters with a balanced attack; Jaecy Eggers (15 points vs. Bushnell) and Kourtney Grossman (17 points vs. Bushnell) have provided consistent support for Bowers.
Historically, the rivalry is closely contested, adding stakes to the conference opener. Idaho’s non-conference schedule, featuring games against Pac-12 opponents California and Utah State, may provide a slight edge in experience. Eastern Washington, however, has proven resilient at home and in tight games, evidenced by narrow wins over South Dakota and Denver.
Saturday’s winner will gain early momentum in the Big Sky standings before a challenging road trip to Montana and Montana State next week for both teams. For Idaho, continuing its efficient offensive rhythm is paramount. For Eastern Washington, containing Gardner and leveraging home-court advantage at Reese Court will be the focal point.
Tipoff is scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
