Lancers Rally in Fourth Quarter, Overtime to Defeat Wolverines
RIVERSIDE, Calif. (Interstat) — In a game that defied its early narrative, the California Baptist women’s basketball team unleashed a dominant fourth-quarter surge to erase a double-digit deficit and force overtime before ultimately cruising to an 82-51 victory over Utah Valley in a Western Athletic Conference matchup Monday night at CBU Events Center.
The contest, witnessed by 358 fans, appeared to be tilting toward the visiting Wolverines through three quarters. Utah Valley, methodically chipping away at an early deficit, took its first lead late in the third period and entered the final frame with a 52-51 advantage, having outscored the Lancers 18-13 in the quarter.
The fourth quarter, however, belonged entirely to California Baptist. The Lancers erupted for 30 points while holding Utah Valley to just 13, transforming a tense one-point game into a decisive rout by the end of regulation. The offensive explosion was fueled by a combination of defensive pressure and efficient shooting, particularly from beyond the arc.
California Baptist guard Filipa Barros orchestrated the comeback, finishing with 16 points and eight assists. Her backcourt partner, Lauren Olsen, provided a game-high 20 points, including several critical baskets during the Lancers’ pivotal run. The interior presence of Grace Schmidt, who added 13 points and two blocks, and Khloe Lemon, who contributed 13 points off the bench, provided balanced scoring that overwhelmed the Wolverines.
Utah Valley was led by Tessa Chaney’s 12 points, while Naia Tanuvasa added seven. The Wolverines struggled to maintain their offensive flow against California Baptist’s intensified defense in the final period, committing turnovers and missing key shots as the Lancers pulled away.
The overtime period was a mere formality, with California Baptist securing the opening tip and maintaining control to seal the 31-point victory. The win improved the Lancers’ season record to 7-7 overall, while Utah Valley fell to 6-5.
The game’s most critical sequence occurred not in the extra period, but in the final minutes of the fourth quarter. With the score still within reach for Utah Valley, California Baptist unleashed a devastating 13-0 run over a three-minute span. The surge was highlighted by consecutive three-pointers from Barros and Olsen, along with a steal and transition layup, that stretched a narrow lead into an insurmountable 72-59 advantage with under three minutes to play. This burst extinguished any remaining hope for a Wolverine comeback and cemented the Lancers’ passage into overtime with all momentum firmly on their side.
California Baptist’s victory was a tale of two halves, showcasing resilience after Utah Valley had successfully clawed back from an 11-point first-quarter hole. The Lancers’ ability to flip the script with such a high-scoring final quarter proved the difference, handing them a key conference win as both teams prepare for the bulk of their WAC schedules in the new year.
