IU Indy Holds Off Milwaukee for Horizon League Win
INDIANAPOLIS (Interstat) — In a Horizon League women’s basketball matchup defined by defensive pressure and offensive droughts, the IU Indy Jaguars used a strong fourth quarter to pull away from the Milwaukee Panthers for a 58-49 victory on Monday night at Fairgrounds Coliseum.
The game, played before an announced crowd of 303, saw the Jaguars improve to 5-8 overall, while the Panthers fell to 4-10.
IU Indy’s Olivia Smith, a 5-foot-10 guard from Fort Wayne, Indiana, delivered a game-high 19 points to lead all scorers. Her backcourt partner, Hailey Smith of Fishers, Indiana, added 13 points and a game-high five assists. Their combined efforts were pivotal in overcoming a gritty Milwaukee squad that struggled to find consistent scoring outside of forward Jorey Buwalda.
Buwalda, a 6-foot sophomore from Randolph, Wisconsin, matched Olivia Smith with 19 points of her own and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds for Milwaukee. Guard Valérie Cassidy-De Falco, from Nottingham, United Kingdom, contributed nine points.
The contest was a defensive struggle from the outset. Both teams forced numerous turnovers, with the Jaguars capitalizing slightly more effectively on the Panthers’ 22 miscues. The first half set the tone, with IU Indy taking a 30-28 lead into halftime after a back-and-forth opening twenty minutes that featured seven lead changes.
The third quarter proved to be the critical juncture where the game’s trajectory was decided. Milwaukee’s offensive challenges intensified as they managed only nine points in the period, shooting a frigid percentage from the floor. The Jaguars, while not explosive, methodically built a cushion. A key sequence late in the quarter saw IU Indy’s Jemma Amoore, a freshman from Ballarat, Australia, come off the bench for a quick steal and driving layup, followed by a pair of free throws from Cassidy-De Falco. The Jaguars then closed the quarter on a 5-0 run, capped by two free throws from Ariana Williams, to take a 40-37 lead into the final frame.
That momentum carried into the fourth quarter. With Milwaukee’s shooting woes continuing, the Jaguars steadily expanded their advantage. Olivia Smith was instrumental in the closing stretch, scoring eight of her points in the final quarter. Her turnaround jumper with 1:45 remaining pushed the lead to 55-49, and after a Milwaukee turnover, she assisted on a Nevaeh Foster layup to extend the margin to eight points with just over a minute to play, effectively sealing the outcome.
The Panthers made a final push, but could not string together enough scores to threaten the lead. A late block by Olivia Smith on a Jorey Buwalda attempt symbolized the defensive resistance IU Indy presented throughout the night.
For Milwaukee, reserve guard Rita Gomes of Lisbon, Portugal, provided a spark off the bench with eight points, including two three-pointers. IU Indy received balanced contributions, with Kamara Mills of Indianapolis adding eight points and Sydney Bolden of Loganville, Georgia, chipping in four points and seven rebounds.
The most important part of the game was the latter half of the third quarter and the start of the fourth, where IU Indy’s defense catalyzed a decisive separation. During this span, Milwaukee endured scoring lulls while the Jaguars executed key plays from multiple sources—Amoore’s energetic steal and score, Williams’ free throws, and the sustained scoring of Olivia Smith. This period transformed a narrow, tense affair into a two-possession game that Milwaukee, plagued by cold shooting, could not overturn.
The win gives IU Indy a positive start to the conference season, while Milwaukee looks to regroup. According to Interstat’s ELO system, IU Indy entered the game with a 63.90 percent probability to win.
Milwaukee returns home to begin a three-game homestand, starting with a pair of games against Robert Morris on Thursday and Friday. IU Indy hits the road for its next contest, a conference matchup at Northern Kentucky on Friday.
