Central Michigan Holds Off Eastern Illinois in Women’s Basketball

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive pressure and offensive struggles, the Central Michigan Chippewas held off a late surge from the Eastern Illinois Panthers to secure a 60-54 victory in a non-conference women’s basketball game Saturday at McGuirk Arena.

The Chippewas improved to 4-1 on the young season, while the Panthers’ search for their first win continues, falling to 0-5.

Neither team found a consistent shooting rhythm, resulting in a contest where the final margin was ultimately decided by key plays in the final minutes. Central Michigan built an early lead and maintained it for the majority of the game, but Eastern Illinois repeatedly chipped away, turning a contest that appeared to be slipping away into a tense battle down the stretch.

Central Michigan established control from the opening tip, racing out to an 18-9 lead after the first quarter. The Chippewas’ early offense was fueled by Demetria Prewitt and Madi Morson, who consistently found seams in the Panther defense. The second quarter saw both teams struggle to score, with Eastern Illinois managing only 10 points and Central Michigan adding 11, sending the Chippewas into halftime with a 29-19 advantage.

The Panthers emerged from the break with renewed energy, outscoring Central Michigan 16-12 in the third quarter to narrow the gap. The comeback effort was spearheaded by guard Ava Stoller, whose playmaking and scoring kept Eastern Illinois within striking distance. The Panthers carried that momentum into the fourth, eventually cutting the deficit to a single possession in the final minutes.

However, every time Eastern Illinois threatened, Central Michigan had an answer, often in the form of Prewitt. The Madison, Wisconsin, native delivered a series of critical baskets in the paint to stymie the Panther rallies. Her driving layup with just under a minute to play pushed the Chippewa lead to 57-53 and effectively sealed the game.

Prewitt finished with a game-high 17 points in just 23 minutes of action. Morson, from Canton, Michigan, matched her backcourt partner with 17 points of her own, adding six rebounds.

For Eastern Illinois, Stoller, a 5-foot-6 guard from St. Petersburg, Florida, led the way with 15 points, four rebounds and five assists. Tiny Lewis contributed 13 points, including a trio of 3-pointers that helped fuel the second-half comeback.

The statistical sheet reflected the gritty nature of the game. Both teams shot under 35% from the floor, with Central Michigan finishing at 34.4% and Eastern Illinois at 35.2%. The teams were nearly identical in assists and steals, each recording seven. Turnovers were rampant, with Eastern Illinois committing 18 and Central Michigan 19.

Where the Chippewas created separation was in the paint, outscoring the Panthers 32-20, and on the offensive glass, where they secured 10 rebounds leading to second-chance opportunities compared to just four for Eastern Illinois. Central Michigan also capitalized more frequently at the free-throw line, making 14 of 18 attempts while the Panthers connected on 10 of 12.

The Panthers’ 6-foot-10 center, Abbie Boutilier of Flower Mound, Texas, provided a strong interior presence with seven points, six rebounds and two blocks. Clara Glad of Rogers, Minnesota, anchored the defense with seven rebounds and two blocks for Eastern Illinois.

The announced attendance at McGuirk Arena was 1,101. Eastern Illinois continues its difficult early-season schedule with a game at Louisville on Friday. Central Michigan’s next contest is on the road Monday against Notre Dame.
