Troy Routs Missouri Behind Strong Start in Women’s Basketball Showdown

COLUMBIA, Mo. (Interstat) — In a high-octane, nonconference women’s basketball showdown, the Troy Trojans delivered a stunning offensive masterclass to defeat the Missouri Tigers 100 to 82 on Thursday afternoon at Mizzou Arena.

The game was effectively decided in a blistering first half where Troy’s offense proved unstoppable. The Trojans erupted for 61 points before halftime, shooting a scorching 10 of 16 from three-point range in the opening two quarters to build a commanding 61 to 54 lead. The Tigers, despite a strong 30-point first quarter of their own, could not keep pace with Troy’s relentless scoring barrage and saw a once-close game slip away in the third quarter.

Troy’s offense operated with ruthless efficiency, scoring 100 points on 84 possessions for an offensive rating of 119.2. The Trojans compensated for a 41.8 percent shooting afternoon from the floor by dominating in nearly every other facet. They hit 13 three-pointers, out-rebounded Missouri 48 to 29, and capitalized on a staggering 16 to 4 advantage in offensive rebounds, which led to 18 second-chance points.

The Trojans’ defensive pressure was equally impactful, forcing 16 Missouri turnovers and converting them into 25 points. Troy also recorded 10 steals and four blocks, consistently disrupting the Tigers’ offensive flow.

Missouri, which fell to 4-2, was led by a standout performance from Shannon Dowell of O’Fallon, Illinois. The 5-foot-10 guard scored 25 points, grabbed five rebounds, and dished out five assists. Grace Slaughter, a 6-foot-2 guard from Grain Valley, Missouri, added 21 points. The Tigers shot an efficient 47.4 percent from the field and were a perfect 21 for 21 from the free throw line, but were ultimately undone by Troy’s overwhelming rebounding and turnover advantages.

For Troy, now 4-1, the victory was a balanced team effort. Leilani Guion of Orlando, Florida, caught fire from deep, scoring 22 points, all in the first three quarters, and knocking down six three-pointers. Emani Jenkins of Dallas, Texas, also poured in 22 points, connecting on six shots from beyond the arc.

The Trojans’ frontcourt controlled the paint and the glass. Ashley Baez, a 5-foot-5 guard from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Zay Dyer, a 6-foot-2 forward from Atlanta, Georgia, filled the stat sheet with 14 points, nine rebounds and two blocks. Fortuna Ngnawo, a 6-foot forward from Bafoussam, Cameroon, was a force inside with 12 points, nine rebounds, four assists and a steal.

The game’s momentum shifted decisively in the third quarter. After a competitive first half, Troy opened the second half with a 16-4 run, holding Missouri to just 15 points in the period. The Trojans’ lead ballooned to 88 to 69 by the end of the third, allowing them to coast through a slower-paced fourth quarter.

Missouri’s Chloe Sotell of Stamford, Connecticut, provided a spark off the bench with 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Jordana Reisma of Brown Deer, Wisconsin, added nine points and six rebounds for the Tigers.

The announced attendance at Mizzou Arena was 5,608. Troy will look to build on this significant road victory when they host Montana State on Monday. Missouri will travel to Kissimmee, Florida, to face Washington State on Sunday.
